Some updates on how I’m doing

Uncategorized

I’ve started schooling around 3 months back in Singapore Institute of Management through one of their University of London programmes. And because of that, I’ve got busier.

School has been interesting, learnt quite a bit from there. I’m not a good student though, spent most of my time looking around in class, getting distracted and picking out all the things that is just not important.

I have also involved myself with some work when I’m studying, working for a local start-up on Flash-related work.

I haven’t really got clearance to talk about my work yet so we’ll probably leave it for next time.

I still continue to read, read all sorts of things that don’t aid my school, don’t aid my work too. Perhaps it’s time to cut time from that.

At least my unofficial holidays are coming but then again, that would just mean work for me.

Five excuses to use when caught sleeping at your desk

Uncategorized

Five excuses to use when caught sleeping at your desk:

  1. “They told me at the Blood Bank this might happen.”
  2. “This is just a 15 minute power nap they raved about in the time management course you sent me to.”
  3. “Whew! Guess I left the top off the Whiteout. You probably got here just in time.”
  4. “Did you ever notice sound coming out of these keyboards when you put your ear down real close?” And the NUMBER ONE best thing to say if you get caught sleeping at your desk…
  5. Raise your head slowly and say, “…in Jesus’ name, Amen.”

July’s messy table

Uncategorized

July messy table.

Here’s my table, it represents what I do everyday. Hmmmp… Let’s see… I’ll start top left to bottom right:

On my shelf:

  • The folder holds mainly bills and forms and receipts I can’t simply throw away
  • The black rounded thing is actually a CD holder, my friends think it looks alien
  • Ahh, I have some origami on the shelf too. They take quite a long time to construct but it’s fun.
  • And tissue paper.

On my computer:

  • Photoshop
  • Windows Live Messenger orange bar blinking
  • A lot of note on the right side demanding my attention
  • It’s a BenQ monitor

On my table:

  • Clealy neglected pencil holder filled with pens with no more ink
  • A bunch of wires. They’re all wires of chargers and USB ports
  • A terrible Sony Ericsson phone. The updownleftright buttons work as and when they like
  • Medicine. I have chloramine there on the table
  • A DBS bank device. It looks funky after being decorated with stickers
  • Microsoft keyboard and mouse and wireless device. It’s a little moody too. Sometimes it just malfunctions. Everytime when I decide to ring Microsoft, It’ll just work miraculously.
  • Many papers. They’re for work basically
  • Fugly Razer mouse pad. It’s free so I ain’t complaining
  • Printer from HP. It acts as an additional shelf too

My table get messy and gets neat every now and then. When my table is messy, it actually means I am doing some work. If it’s neat and tidy, well… It’s not a good sign. It means that I have nothing to do and decided - on a really rare occassion - to clean up the mess. May my table stay messy till August.

It isn’t easy to do computer repairs

Uncategorized

I dragged myself to go to this person’s house to fix his computer. He is rude and keep bargaining with me for a better price. I almost wanted to say no already but I decided to go fix his bloody computer anyway.

I got his phone number from my mother’s friend who wished that I help this fellow up a little. I only know how to fix basic problems by the way and I prefer fixing software-related issues. And so I called him:

Me: I’m the fix-computer guy.
Him: Good, come my house, my computer isn’t working.
Me: Is it a software or hardware problem?
Him: Software.
Me: Do you roughly know what’s wrong?
Him: Power pack spoil.
Me: Power pack? You mean power supply?
Him: No, power pack _lah_.
Me: And you sure it is a software problem?
Him: Power pack is software.

Okay, so it’s a software problem and I went to his house. And I found out it is a freaking hardware problem. It is a power supply problem and the only solution that I know is to replace the power supply. I offer to buy him a new one but he only wants second hand power supply. In the end, I gotten him one and fix it up for him. I wasn’t happy with him and he probably isn’t happy with me either.

He is by far the most rude person I have talked to. It almost makes me feel like not fixing any more computers. When I quote a price, I quote a reasonable price and do not expect people to bargain it down. I don’t like to penalize those people who do not bargain.

I’m happily working on Labor Day

Uncategorized

What’s really fortunate is that today is Labor Day and I’m working on Labor Day. Nothing beats beings in camp during a non-working day.

We had this duty system going on that makes me working once a week every fortnight, so I kinda had to stay in camp during weekends every fortnight. The camps aren’t busy during the weekends. (Of course, there are exceptions when life sucks especially on a weekend duty.)

The whole place is quiet and nice, the warren officers are more relaxed today too. After all, it’s Labor Day. The real bonus of working during Labor Day is that you are returned with a day off for your effort. There really is no gain if you look at it on the surface.

But think of this scenario, you stay in camp, doing nothing much and gain a day off. Then you use a day’s off to clear on a working day. That means you kinda work lesser right? Right on!
