Why Wikipedia is awesome

Uncategorized

This is so true about Wikipedia, I often go to Wikipedia to search for some computing related stuff and end up reading a bunch of articles from Aristotle to Zula. These are the times when productive time is turned unproductive.

The problem with Wikipedia.

(The problem with Wikipedia.)

Well and finally, if you’re really interested, you can check out Wikipedia for emergency bleeding control. There’s a picture of a bleeding guy smiling happily, looking pleased with himself in there.

On a side note, going to Digg.com destroys productivity too.

Funny Singaporean defaced Wikipedia, poked fun of ministers

Uncategorized

I was poking around Wikipedia and I spotted something hilarious, IP address 203.116.59.28 is placing all sorts of lies in Wikipedia!

In the Lee Kuan Yew article, he wrote:

  • He is very old.

Wikipedia's image of a horse.

In the Lee Hsien Loong article, he wrote and replace an image:

  • Notice how he bears the appearance of a horse with his long facial features, giving one the unpleasant feeling of being in a zoo
  • (Also changed Lee Hsien Loong picture into a horse)

In the Singapore Dollar article, he wrote:

  • You mean you do not like Sing dollar?

In the Li Hongyi article, he wrote this and this:

  • Li is also found to be suffering from cerebral palsy, lunacy and syphilis.
  • Li is known to be suffering from dyslexia.

He is also:

It is not uncommon to spot people adding chunks of nonsense in Wikipedia. It’s the most unplesant thing to do. Imagine you had to do a project and just take the information directly from Wikipedia. You’ll end up with chunks of shit. It’s unfortunate that there are always people trying to distort the free online encyclopedia. While the change is often reverted, it takes a couple of days. Some rarer defaced articles gone unnoticed.

And therefore, everytime you do research, never ever trust just one source. If Wikipedia says this, counter check it with Encarta or Britannica. Get the “facts” right. It’s a great community encyclopedia but don’t trust it completely.

On a side note, Wikipedia just got its 2 millionth article.

Benoit’s death posted in Wikipedia before bodies found

Uncategorized

Interestingly, before the bodies of Chris Benoit and his family were found by the police, his Wikipedia entry is updated to include the death of his wife! How could that be possible?

Christopher Michael Benoit (May 21, 1967 – June 24, 2007) was a Canadian-American professional wrestler who performed in Extreme Championship Wrestling, World Championship Wrestling, and World Wrestling Entertainment. He was regarded as one of the best technical wrestlers in his time.

On June 25, 2007, Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son Daniel were found dead in their Fayetteville, Georgia home. Subsequent investigations have confirmed that Chris Benoit murdered his wife and son and then hanged himself. (Source is Wikipedia)

Web Time Stamps Indicate Nancy Benoit’s Death Reported on Web at Least 13 Hours Before Police Found Bodies in Her Home

An anonymous user operating a computer traced to Stamford, Conn. – home to World Wrestling Entertainment – posted an entry to pro wrestler Chris Benoit’s biography on Wikipedia.org announcing the death of his wife Nancy at least 13 hours before police in suburban Atlanta said they found her body along with her husband’s and that of their 7-year-old son, FOXNews.com has learned.

The posting reads: “Chris Benoit was replaced by [Johnny Nitro] for the ECW Championship match at Vengeance, as Benoit was not there due to personal issues, stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.” According to a Wikipedia.org report published after FOXNews.com made inquiries, the edit was reversed just under one hour later with the comment:

“Need a reliable source. Saying that his wife died is a pretty big statement, you need to back it up with something.”

I don’t really know what to say. It’s just something odd. Hmmmp, the power of Wikipedia?

wikiality//colbert

Uncategorized

Just like my previous post, Stephen Colbert tries to talk himself through. Quite convincing actually. Now I start to not trust Wikipedia that much. I guess it’s a double edge sword – you will have more people contributing your articles, you will also made it easier to put false information into them.

Wikipedia can still be trusted I feel, but don’t quote it that blindly. Always go to the actual source if there is one to verify how true it is. But of course, for normal geography schoolwork, you can always follow blindly. Your geography teacher knows nuts about what you write in your homework. You just need to make it sound convincing. The elephant population has increased in Africa, not because it really did increase, just because some menace is behind his computer typing nonsense into a user-contributed encyclopedia.
