Six most frequently quoted bullsh*t statistics

The 6 Most Frequently Quoted Bullsh*t Statistics

  1. You Accidentally Swallow About 8 Spiders a Year: Back in 1993, people were already getting fooled by online urban legends at an amusing rate. So, a columnist for PC Professional named Lisa Holst decided to prove that you could make up anything on the internet and people would believe it. (I guess everyone can sleep well tonight already.)
  2. You Only Use 10% of Your Brain: I knew this is totally nonsense because I don’t find brains that useful.
  3. You Must Wait 30 Minutes After Eating Before Swimming: This somehow spread to my mom and she is a firm believer in a 30-minute wait at the swimming pool if something was eaten.

Read more at Cracked.

I always hear strange unverified statistics. You can’t possibly get your friends to include a source in whatever they say. But sometimes, I wish they did. My mom tells me the strangest statistics and health tips. We really shouldn’t go into that.

Review: The New Google Analytics

reviews

Google rolls out new version of Google Analytics and it’s looking better than ever!

What is new?

In the new version, your reports have been redesigned for clarity, greater visibility of important metrics, and ease of use. Here are just a few of the features you’ll notice:

  • Email and export reports: Schedule or send ad-hoc personalized report emails and export reports in PDF format.
  • Custom Dashboard: No more digging through reports. Put all the information you need on a custom dashboard that you can email to others.
  • Trend and Over-time Graph: Compare time periods and select date ranges without losing sight of long term trends.
  • Contextual help tips: Context sensitive Help and Conversion University tips are available from every report.

The new interface has everything the previous interface had and more. In addition, links within reports make it easier to navigate related information and explore your data. (The above is from an email that Google sent me.)

Anyway, let’s take a visual tour of the new interface.

The interface undergoes a tremendous update.

The interface undergoes a tremendous update, first of all. It looks much cleaner, much sleeker and feels faster. I’ll share with you some site statistics meanwhile.

You can see where my visitors are coming from.

From the above chart, you can see where my visitors are coming from. Not many people come from Asia and the reason is that most people come to this blog for images. I mean, they even took image of my brother’s birthday cake and post it on blogs to wish their friends happy birthday, wish they at least link back sometimes. I don’t block hot linking but I discourage hot-linking by placing a watermark on all my images. (more…)

Try out SiteScore by SilkTide. SiteScore attempts to score the marketing, design, accessibility, experience and visitor rating of the web site.

I give it a test and realized that I failed in accessibility. I didn’t put disabled people into consideration. It says that //beconfused appears to be in violation of the British Disability Discrimination Act. Opps. Well… Maybe next time.

Silktide SiteScore for this website

Test it on your site too. ;)

Last months visitors are are all high, page visits peak at 792. I now use Google Analytics to track visitors as they present a more accurate overview of the pages that people visit.

Search statistics from May 2 to June 1.

_(Search statistics from May 2 to June 1.)_

The image is generated using Microsoft Excel 2007. Very pretty colors and anti-alias. Here’s a top 20 list of who search what last month.

*Top 20 searches during May*

# mizuki yoshii - 229
# breast - 78
# kurohige kiki ippatsu - 56
# mizuki furui - 41
# playstation 3 - 37
# breast feeding - 36
# saaya irie - 34
# japanese lyrics - 32
# fiona xie bra - 30
# jay chou - 27
# james gomez - 25
# create winks - 20
# judson laipply - 20
# create msn winks - 18
# fiona xie bra blog - 18
# beconfused.com - 18
# I not stupid too - 15
# beconfused - 14
# shizuka umemoto - 13

You know, I kinda get uneasy when people search for “beconfused” and “beconfused.com”. I wonder why are people try to search for those. People are always searching for “breast” somehow.

Visits and Page view statistics from May 2 to June 1.

I use Google Analytics now because it tracks real visitors better. Previous I use AWStats which is also very good. Unfortunately AWStats track people who link directly to my images too. I am not interested in those visitors too.

LeapFish aside, you can give this a try too.

My blog is worth $16,371.66.
How much is your blog worth?

Of course, this is just for fun only and shouldn’t be taken seriously. My blog is worth 16K? That’s great. But I doubt that’s accurate. I don’t think anyone would buy it for more than 100 bucks.

April global site statistics are out.

*Brand* - Unique Audience (000), Time Per Person (hh:mm:ss):
# *Yahoo!* - 105,444, 3:10:02
# *Microsoft* - 95,777, 0:45:25
# *MSN* - 92,786, 1:38:53
# *Google* - 92,120, 0:52:48
# *AOL* - 70,433, 6:11:06
# *eBay* - 53,465, 1:53:00
# *MapQuest* - 40,801, 0:10:53
# *MySpace* - 38,359, 2:06:46
# *Real Network* - 38,183, 0:47:48
# *Amazon* - 37,854, 0:19:37

Source: Nielsen//NetRatings (pdf)

Wow, looks like more than a hundred million unique visitors visit Yahoo!, I think Yahoo! has one of the best content. I am not surprised that people are willing to spend time there. Google’s just a search engine mainly despite them trying to enter all sorts of markets. As for MSN, they got to improve their content.

I’m a little surprise to see the time spent in Amazon’s web site though. I thought people would have spend more time there. I guess they just aren’t interested to buy their stuff. The highest jumper is probably MySpace, which is now the top social-networking web site.

On the month of April, I have 26119 unique visitors with the majority just interested in some images in my blog. And 84.9% leave my site within 30 seconds.
