US comic George Carlin dies at 71: report

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Irreverent US comedian George Carlin, who became known as a voice of the 1970s counterculture and was one of the country’s best known funny men, died on Sunday aged 71, US media reported.

The Grammy award winner, whose career spanned five decades, died of heart failure, his publicist Jeff Abraham told the New York Times.

Carlin had a history of heart problems and passed away in Santa Monica, California after checking into the hospital with chest pains.

He won four Grammy Awards, including one for his 1972 comedy recording “FM & AM,” in which he combined his older, more conventional material that entertained audiences in the 1950s and 60s, with his new, edgier and more controversial style.

Gray-bearded and often dressed in black casual attire, Carlin frequently admitted to drug use and shocked 1970s audiences with his hit “Seven Words That Can Never Be Said on Television.” (Source: AFP)

Awesome hippy music video!

Uncategorized

Hippy music video featuring terrible lip-synching and scantily-cladded women.

Tommy Seebach - Apache

That is Tommy Seebach (September 14, 1949 - March 31, 2003), born Tommy Seebach Mortensen in Copenhagen, Denmark, was a popular Danish singer, composer, organist, pianist and producer. He gained mainstream popularity in Denmark in 1965, when he became a member of the band Sir Henry And His Butlers, writing many of their most popular hits. In 1976 he emerged as a successful solo artist. His hit album “Tommygun” was released in 1977. At the same time he was in high demand as a producer at his record company EMI, where he was involved in projects for artists such as Lecia & Lucienne. Seebach’s problems with alcoholism took their toll on him and he died at the age of 53 from a heart attack at amusement park Bakken, where he was head of musical entertainment during the past several years.

The song he covered is Apache.

And someone commented on Wikipedia in the same article - Recently, people in the United States have rediscovered the promotional video for Seebach’s 1977 disco version of the Shadows’ hit “Apache,” in which he is seen prancing around the forest with female dancers and attempting to lip-synch. Youtube has been flooded with “Apache” remixes, merely type “Tommy Seebach Vs”.

Sacha Baron Cohen retires Borat and Ali G

Uncategorized

Sacha Baron Cohen decides to retire Borat and Ali G. I’m not too surprised though, after all the whole idea of both characters is to catch people at their most unaware times. And since Borat and Ali G got so popular, it’s probably hard for him to continue his act.

RIP Borat And Ali G

Sacha Baron Cohen is retiring the outrageously anti-Semitic, homophobic Kazakh journalist Borat as well as his alter ego, aspiring rapper Ali G.

Cohen readily admits he is more comfortable talking in the guise of the characters he has created, but unfortunately for him, both Ali G and Borat have had their day. Too many people know them and he reluctantly acknowledges that he can no longer retreat behind their personas.

“When I was being Ali G and Borat I was in character sometimes 14 hours a day and I came to love them, so admitting I am never going to play them again is quite a sad thing,” the 36-year-old actor-comedian says in the British newspaper’s Friday edition. “It is like saying goodbye to a loved one. It is hard, and the problem with success, although it’s fantastic, is that every new person who sees the Borat movie is one less person I ‘get’ with Borat again, so it’s a kind of self-defeating form, really.”

“It’s upsetting, but the success has been great and better than anything I could have dreamed of.”

TED: Philippe Starck talks about why design

Uncategorized

Legendary designer Philippe Starck — with no pretty slides behind him — spends 18 minutes reaching for the very roots of the question “Why design?” Along the way he drops brilliant insights into the human condition; listen carefully for one perfectly crystallized mantra for all of us, genius or not. Yet all this deep thought, he cheerfully admits, is to aid in the design of a better toothbrush.

Philippe Starck: Why design?

He is pretty entertaining, calls us the most stupid bacteria. He speaks terrible English but who cares he’s funny at TED.

Funny Singaporean defaced Wikipedia, poked fun of ministers

Uncategorized

I was poking around Wikipedia and I spotted something hilarious, IP address 203.116.59.28 is placing all sorts of lies in Wikipedia!

In the Lee Kuan Yew article, he wrote:

  • He is very old.

Wikipedia's image of a horse.

In the Lee Hsien Loong article, he wrote and replace an image:

  • Notice how he bears the appearance of a horse with his long facial features, giving one the unpleasant feeling of being in a zoo
  • (Also changed Lee Hsien Loong picture into a horse)

In the Singapore Dollar article, he wrote:

  • You mean you do not like Sing dollar?

In the Li Hongyi article, he wrote this and this:

  • Li is also found to be suffering from cerebral palsy, lunacy and syphilis.
  • Li is known to be suffering from dyslexia.

He is also:

It is not uncommon to spot people adding chunks of nonsense in Wikipedia. It’s the most unplesant thing to do. Imagine you had to do a project and just take the information directly from Wikipedia. You’ll end up with chunks of shit. It’s unfortunate that there are always people trying to distort the free online encyclopedia. While the change is often reverted, it takes a couple of days. Some rarer defaced articles gone unnoticed.

And therefore, everytime you do research, never ever trust just one source. If Wikipedia says this, counter check it with Encarta or Britannica. Get the “facts” right. It’s a great community encyclopedia but don’t trust it completely.

On a side note, Wikipedia just got its 2 millionth article.

Mexican tycoon overtakes Bill Gates as world’s richest

Uncategorized

The Guardian reports Microsoft founder Bill Gates looks to have lost his title as the world’s richest man, toppled from top spot by the Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim.

Three months ago the cigar-chomping Mr Slim quietly slipped past legendary US investor Warren Buffett to take second place in the global wealth league.

Now, thanks to a surge in the shares of his America Movil group, Mr Slim has claimed pole position, according to the Mexican online financial publication, Sentido Común.

Erm… I guess that’s a congratulations for him. Anyway, the world richest isn’t a big deal. I never really heard much of Carlos Slim actually.

Lasse Gjertsen drums up some tunes

Uncategorized

Check out Lasse Gjertsen’s really cool video editing. He record beats from a drum and merge them all into a song. It’s tiresome work but the results - it’s just awesome!

Amateur - Lasse Gjertsen

The song didn’t sound bad too. Good work!

[Yes, I'm aware it's a lousy post title. I don't know what to put there.]
