Do you know the names for these? The bottom part of the nose between the nostrils. The metal band on a pencil that holds the eraser in place. The long tail on a graduate’s academic hood. Creases on the inside of the wrist. A holder for a handleless coffee cup. The revolving star on the back of a cowboy’s spurs.
1) Aglet - The plain or ornamental covering on the end of a shoelace.
And my friend notes that a previous 8 Days section - Last Page - article is probably incorrect. She says 8 Days claim that there is no name for the endings of a shoelace, I guess there really is.

Have you wonder why your favorite musicians named their bands?
Here’s a short list of some interesting ones:
AC/DC - It is said that one of the band member saw it on an appliance and thought it had something to do with power. (It does mean “alternating current / direct current”.) The band used it not realizing it was also slang for a bisexual- the band claims NOT to be bisexual.
BACKSTREET BOYS - The Backstreet Market was a store in Florida where the guys used to hang out.
BLINK 182 - Blink 182 supposedly has NO meaning at all but the band fosters stories on origins. Sample: used to be just “Blink” but was threatened by a lawsuit from a little known Irish band with the same name, so they added the 182 which is the number of times the f-word was said in one of the members favorite movies.
BOB DYLAN - His real name is Robert Zimmerman - he liked the poet Dylan Thomas.
EMINEM - from his real name Marshall Mathers he took M&M and rewrote it phonetically as Eminem.
GOO GOO DOLLS - used to be called the Sex Maggots, and when they were told that local newspapers wouldn’t print that name, Jonny Rzeznik picked up a magazine from the early 60’s with an ad for a doll that cried Goo Goo when you turned it upside down.
GUNS ‘N’ ROSES - originally two bands L.A. GUNNS and HOLLYWOOD ROSES. Hollywood Roses was headed by Axl Rose, Tracii Guns headed the other band which also featured Slash. The two frequented clubs and played there and were friends.
LIMP BIZKIT - Got the idea from Fred Durst’s dog Biscuit who has a limp.
LL COOL J - for “Ladies Love Cool James”.
NO DOUBT - a favorite phrase of John Spence, it became the name of the band prior to his suicide.

Not sure if it’s accurate but interesting nevertheless.

Just what the hell is this on the wall!?
I just found this in my apartment. It disgusts me. Something seem to be living inside. Is it a nest for some flying creatures? I’ve seen this in camp before. And I asked my campmate what the hell is that and no one seems to know.
Some think that it’s an ant nest, others believes it’s a flying insect. Now this thing is in my house, it’s creepy. Thank god it’s not in my room.
This is found somewhere near the ceiling of my 21-year-old apartment. The walls on my living room is not well painted as you can see, you guys probably can guess who painted it. The thing seems to be coming out from the plastic casing that stores wires. It’s brown and horrible. It appears to be some colony from the unwelcomed insect kingdom. I’m moving house! I’m moving house really, no kidding.
*I have 2 questions:*
* What do you call the plastic casing that stores wires?
* What the hell is the brown thing coming out of the plastic wire casings?
Office 2007’s going to have a brand new name. Well, sorta…
The next version of Office is officially known as the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Little ’s’. Year before the product. Exactly 32 characters.
Source: Inside Office Online
So now it’s the 2007 Microsoft Office system. It’s a long name and everyone would probably call it Office 2007 anyway.
Personally, I think it’s a good move to make people aware of the ‘2007′ than the product since the coming version is a significant update to the Microsoft Office suite, I mean, system. Hopefully people would call it 2007 Office or something, it’s clearer. What do you think?

Microsoft announced a new product - Windows Live Search. This product is the update for Windows Desktop Search. Microsoft decides it’s time to change its name.
As Microsoft watchers inside and outside the company have noted, Microsoft is not terribly astute when it comes to naming its products. But on Wednesday, the branding department hit a new low, in terms of bad naming choices. Microsoft has decided to christen the new Windows desktop search application (that can search your desktop/Intranet and Internet), due to go beta later this year, as “Windows Live Search.” But there already is a Windows Live Search รข?? the Internet search service that is currently in beta. Are the two products the same? No, the Softies said. Are they related? Nope. We’ve decided we’re going to try using Windows Live Search A (for the desktop app version) and Windows Live Search S for the MSN service. And we thought the SharePoint branding was confusing!

Perhaps it’s time to check out the dictionary, Microsoft. There are lots of unused words. Windows Live Search, both the desktop and the online version, is currently under beta.

I was walking around at Marina Square and I entered one of those gift shops. Gift shops have those fridge magnets with names and they give a bunch of encouraging terms related to your English name.
And I saw one that goes like this:
Calvin
Meaning - Bald. [I think it's either in Greek or Hebrew.]
Suggests a guy who is smart, friendly, creative and successful.
I just laugh out in the shop. Bald is probably associated with intelligence and successfulness. Creativeness has pretty much nothing to do with baldness. Friendly is a social development that doesn’t make you lose your hair too.
It’s just amazing how optimistic these magnets are, hahaa… I just hope none of your guys are called Calvin.
Have you wondered what does DreamWorks SKG stand for? I mean, you probably guessed that DreamWorks isn’t an abbreviation but what about SKG?

_(DreamWorks SKG logo.)_
It turns out that the initials “SKG” stand for the company’s co-founders, Spielberg (film director and founder of Amblin Entertainment), Katzenberg (former head of The Walt Disney Company’s film studios), and Geffen (founder of Geffen Records).
DreamWorks began as an ambitious attempt by media moguls David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Steven Spielberg to create a new Hollywood studio, but in December 2005, the founders agreed to sell the studio to Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures. DreamWork made many of my favorite movies.
