SMS celebrates 15th birthday! Happy Birthday SMS!

Did you know that SMS started in 1992 by Acision and today most of us can’t live without it. So happy birthday SMS!

15 Years of the SMS

The mobile phone industry is today celebrating the 15th birthday of the Short Message Service Centre (SMSC), the principal application behind text messaging first brought to market by Acision in 1992. The first ever SMSC was introduced as a product designed primarily to deal with the demands and improve reliability of a developing mobile industry, and in that year the first of many deals was signed with Telenor.

Despite the rapid evolution of the mobile market, SMS is still the most important value-added service for operators. For operators looking to provide subscribers with robust messaging services, today’s mix and match platform means they can specify SMS capacity to meet their requirements. It is this scalability that makes the SMSC cost effective and adaptable to both growing and mature markets. Even in the most developed markets, such as Western Europe where SMS service penetration has reached 90%, SMSCs are vital to operators seeking to differentiate themselves through high-quality enhanced messaging services.

Samsung passes Motorola, takes number two market share spot

Samsung takes over Motorola in number two spot in glabol handset market share! Congratulation! Now they just left Nokia to compete with. As reported in Engadget, Motorola shipped 35 to 36 million cellphones in Q2 as compared to Samsung shipping 37.4 million.

Samsung attributes its success to an ever-expanding Ultra Edition line and increased volume in its entry-level lineup, something Motorola has been looking for with its innovative MOTOFONE.

The Ultra Edition’s cool, I’ve gotten one for myself too. Samsung’s entry level phones are quite affordable too. I think they deserve the second spot! :D

Multi-touch video iPods to arrive in August

Ahh, saw this at AppleInsider, a touch-screen iPod. It would be cool. I just bought a little gadget – a Samsung phone. It has a little touch pad thingy. It takes a while to get used to it but now I’m quite pleased with my buy. Anyway, back to iPod news – rumor says Apple is launching next-gen iPod in August with touch-screen capabilities similar to that of iPhone.

Apple is preparing to launch a next-generation video iPod in August that features a touch-screen panel similar to the iPhone, according to DigiTimes.

Citing “sources at upstream suppliers,” the Far Eastern rumor publication reports that Wintek will be supplying the touch panels for the players.

“The Taiwan-based panel maker will begin shipping capacitive touch screen panels in the second half of 2007,” DigiTimes said. “The company noted that its touch screen panels will be used with customers’ own software and ICs.”

The last significant update to Apple’s video iPod family came almost two years ago, when the company used a media event to introduce 30GB and 60GB models with color screens and video playback capabilities.

Although the video players were refreshed the following fall, the updates were modest at best — they included game support, brighter displays, and 20GB of additional capacity on the high-end model.

What I am more excited about is that they are squeezing the Mac OS is so many devices these days. Apple seems to be leading in handheld technology. In future if your kids are holding those ultra powerful hand held devices, you really got to thank Apple for coming out with iPhone, Sony for coming out with PSP, Samsung with their many attempts to create slimmer products, Motorola which did a lot of good in slimmer technologies in the past. These companies are constantly pushing the limits of hand held devices. I can almost smell an iPod Nano powered by Mac OS too.

How to make your laptop last longer

Here are some tips to make your laptop last longer:

Dim your screen – Most laptops come with the ability to dim your laptop screen. Some even come with ways to modify CPU and cooling performance. Cut them down to the lowest level you can tolerate to squeeze out some extra battery juice.

Cut down external devices – USB devices (including your mouse) & WiFi drain down your laptop battery. Remove or shut them down when not in use. It goes without saying that charging other devices (like your iPod) with your laptop when on battery is a surefire way of quickly wiping out the charge on your laptop battery.

Run off a hard drive rather than CD/DVD – As power consuming as hard drives are, CD and DVD drives are worse. Even having one in the drive can be power consuming. They spin, taking power, even when they?re not actively being used. Wherever possible, try to run on virtual drives using programs like Alcohol 120% rather than optical ones.

I would like to highlight the last point. I see a lot of people watching anime from CDs when they could in fact just copy it over to the harddisk. It saves that bit of electricity to let you watch an extra episode of your Ouran Host Club anime. So do take note. ;)

Finally, if you’re not using your laptop, just switch it off, the screensaver doesn’t help much. Using a laptop to listen to MP3 is a complete waste of electricity too. Be a little more energy saver, borrow a book from a library or just listen songs through a music player.

Writing something to make myself happy

Yay, let’s write something more cheery.

I bought a Samsung Ultra Edition 10.4 U600 from SingTel. They’ll send me coming Wednesday if things go correct and I can go around fluanting my new phone. I never really bought phones that I really like. This is perhaps the first phone that I bought that scored high marks in the looks department. My previous phones are okay, they aren’t ugly but this is just too pretty. My previous phones are okay, they aren’t ugly but this is just too pretty.

Let’s see, did you know today it’s 070707. It makes a good day to be happy about. Perhaps it’ll be your lucky day today. A friend is launching a company today, and I’m aware Live Earth is happening too. If you missed this year’s nice number, you can always wait for 080808, or 090909 or 101010 or 111111 (cool!) or 121212. But they will not be a 131313 of course and you’ll have to wait a century to see these nice numbers again. So treasure these dates and start planning ahead for event to occur then. ;)

And my little hamster seems to be less scared of me already. It still tries to bite my fingers sometimes but I never got bitten till there’s blood now. Perhaps it’s just that I learnt how to handle it better. Maybe it just gotten used to the human hand.

Oh, I just went to Sim Lim too, I got a power supply unit to fix somebody’s computer. It was a good price at SG$63, it’s a CoolerMaster Extreme Power 430 Watts and it’s black and cool. The customer was concern with overheating and I recommended CoolerMaster because it sounds like it won’t overheat since it’s supposed to be a master in being cool. I like the packaging, CoolerMaster put in good effort to package a quality product.

Okay, now I am happier already. Time to go to bed. It’s almost 3 in the morning and I’m staring at some bank statements wondering where my money went to. It isn’t exactly most encouraging. Have a good 070707 day ahead.

YouTube and LG partner to roll out phones

YouTube and LG decides to partner to come out with phone, not sure if it would be successful. I’m not really fond of LG phones.

Youtube, SKorea’s LG agree to develop mobile phone

SEOUL (AFP) – South Korea’s LG Electronics said Tuesday it has signed an agrement with YouTube, the world’s biggest video-sharing website, to develop a mobile phone which can operate the service.

LG Electronics said the proposed model will enable users to upload, view and share video clips or user-created content (UCC) online freely without using computers.

“LG Electronics will unveil the mobile handset that fully supports the YouTube service for the first time in Europe in the second half of this year,” the South Korean firm said in a statement.

LG Electronics, the world’s fifth-largest mobile phone manufacturer, is also stepping up its partnership with Google, the world’s largest Internet serach engine which owns YouTube.

It began selling third-generation (3G) handsets called “Google phones” with software installed for directly using the Google service, in Europe last month.

If they really do come out with this YouTube LG phones, I will mock at it for 1 week at least. Anyway, the market is just not ready for videos being served via mobile phones I think. Phones need to be a lot cheaper and the phone subscription need to be made cheaper too. That way, all the new-generation kids would go get cheated and purchase these YouTube phones. The students would find it fun… If they have the money.

And Daryl and I were talking about the LG logo, we don’t like it a lot.

Me: LG has a frigging smiley that doesn’t look like its smiling. it looks like it’s winking at you but it really is just a terrible attempt to put alphabets ‘L’ and ‘G’ into a logo

D: i always think it’s freaky. bcos i imagine a real person w an LG head. but i always imagine freaky things.

Me: i don’t wish to imagine that, it’s nightmarish

The LG logo is the one with the red colored head.
