Electronic Arts to acquire BioWare and Pandemic. I’m just a little disappointed. Both are good good studios. I much prefer EA to stop buying game studios. One day, perhaps there will be like 5 game companies in the world only – EA, Vivendi Universal, Nintendo, Microsoft and Square Enix. This came a week after Microsoft and Bungie split up which I thought was quite surprising actually.

EA To Acquire BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced an agreement with Elevation Partners to acquire VG Holding Corp. — the owner of both BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios. This acquisition gives EA a strong competitive position in key genres in interactive entertainment: action, adventure and role-playing games. The two studios have been recognized for creating some of the highest-quality games in the industry.
BioWare Corp. and Pandemic Studios have ten franchises under development, including six wholly owned games. BioWare Corp. is currently developing the highly anticipated Mass Effect, which will be published by Microsoft in November, and is in the early development stages of a massively multiplayer online game. New MMORPG – Lunia, Record of the Lunia War

Ahh, there’s a new MMORPG for everyone. Lunia, Record of the Lunia War starts its open beta today. I looked at the videos, browsed through some screenshots. The games looks attractive and promising. The difference with this MMORPG is that it is kinda action arcade style which is something new in MMORPG. Everything that’s new always welcomed.

So if you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can give this game a try. Check out the in game video. Below is a screenshot of the game:

I am afraid that I don’t have time to venture into an MMORPG at the moment. I’ll just post it and perhaps someone would find it fun to play.

Gang Kidnaps Gamer to Get Password Using Fake Orkut Date
An armed gang of four kidnapped one of the world’s top RPG gamers after one criminal’s girlfriend lured him into a fake date using Orkut, Google’s social network. After sequestering him in Sao Paulo, they held a gun against the victim’s head for five hours to get his password, which they wanted to sell for $8,000.
The group leader had a gun against his head all that time but the guy didn’t say a word. At that point, the crooks gave up and decided to let him go. The brazilian police then caught the four suspects, aged 19 to 27.
According to the police, the captive is the world leader in GunBound, a turn-based RPG-style multiplayer online game. Developed in South Korea, in this artillery game you get more experience points, offensive and defensive capabilities depending on your skills during battle, as well as money to buy more weapons, armor and all kinds of gear for your multiple avatars. You can only play with one of your avatars each time, but all of them belong to a single account.
The game looks to be quite popular, so the four gangsters decided they could make some quick cash if they kidnapped him to steal his user. Their plan: use one of the criminal’s girlfriends, called Tamires, to get him into a date using Google’s online social network Orkut, which is also extremely popular in Brazil. After contacting and seducing him, she told the GunBound wizard to meet her in a shopping mall.
But she never appeared.

Gunbound is a game that is somewhat like Worms 2 where you aim and shoot in a 2D environment at your enemies. It’s quite popular in Singapore back then but most people moved on to play games like MapleStory and others already. The game has Korean origins as do most online games. I used to played a little and I didn’t fare too well in it. I use the Mammoth I think… Or was it.

US crime rates fall since the release of Doom

We always see people blaming violent games for crimes in the city. And of course, we have people saying otherwise. Jack Thompson would just go screaming that violent games are bad for the society but are they really that bad?

Since Doom was released in 1993, violent crimes in the United States have to 40% of what they used to be. Coincidence? Possibly, yes. However, the year Quake and Duke Nukem 3D were released, violent crimes fell by 4%, and a further 2% when Grand Theft Auto was released.

Of course, merely quoting some statistics is not going to convince anyone. But let us be reminded once again that there is no conclusive statistics to point violent games lead to more crimes. Perhaps we should look into other ways to dealing with city crimes and stop blaming the bloody (no puns intended) violent games.

Crazy Japanese arcade game skills

I don’t really visit arcades because the whole blending of noise by all the gaming machines just drive me nuts. It’s not the volume of the sound. It’s the mixture. But many teenagers visit them religiously to drive racing cars. They probably don’t have a driving licence. Anyway, the Japanese are pretty good in those music-related games, such as this guy:

Warrant reveals no games in Cho Seung Hui’s posession

Cho Seung Hui (Ã¬Â¡Â°Ã¬?Â¹ÃÂÂ¬), the troubled young man whose nightmarish assault on his fellow students will most likely be studied for years to come, doesn’t seem to have been someone who had any involvement with video games in his recent history.

The claim of video games causing Cho to commit this massacre is thereby inaccurate. Everytime such thing happens, someone would just blame computer games. I always thought that it’s something that the big media companies thought up since they are not producing or publishing any games.

Cho killed 33 students in Virginia Tech, including himself. Most of the people I know can’t pronounce ‘virginia’ correctly and it sounded like some other word in the dictionary.

Xbox 360 gets new peripheral QWERTY thumb keyboard

Engadget notes that Xbox 360 is getting a new peripheral – a QWERTY keyboard no less.

It doesn’t really look too comfortable but it’s perhaps something new. It’s now got a keyboard and it’s somewhat like a computer now. It just needs a web browser, probably not Mozilla Firefox. How about Xbox 360 Internet Explorer? (Please give me some money if you use this name, thank you.)

I was just thinking last week actually – one day gaming consoles and PCs would become some sort of a combine console. And the company that’s likely to make it happen is probably Microsoft. Apple is going a slightly different directly by introducing the Apple TV thing. It’s cool but honestly, I don’t think it would sell that well.

Sony has a great contender in Playstation 3 but the Playstation 3 console pricing is just not as consumer-friendly. But whether Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3 or Nintendo Wii win is really not much of my concern; in the end, they just come and go but the overall technological benefit they bring to the living room – well, those are here to stay.

The whole living room technology is going to be really exciting coming decade, so watch out for it.

[By the way, I'm currently drooling over Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. Any kind (and wealthy) soul wish to buy it for me? Hehee...]

Known as “Go Go Mario”, the Super Mario Bros. theme was given Japanese lyrics. Check out the video for a performance of the song and the English translation of the lyrics. The video clip was taken from the “Mario and Zelda Big Band live” concert that was held on September 14th, 2003 at the Nihon Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo, Japan. The clip was part of a mini-DVD that came with a UK Gamecube magazine.
