WordPress 2.2 is here!

Uncategorized

Unfortunately, tagging isn’t ready in WordPress 2.2. The following are the highlights of WordPress 2.2:

  • WordPress Widgets allow you to easily rearrange and customize areas of your weblog (usually sidebars) with drag-and-drop simplicity. This functionality was originally available as a plugin Widgets are now included by default in the core code, significantly cleaned up, and enabled for the default themes.
  • Full Atom support, including updating our Atom feeds to use the 1.0 standard spec and including an implementation of the Atom Publishing API to complement our XML-RPC interface.
  • A new Blogger importer that is able to handle the latest version of Google’s Blogger product and seamlessly import posts and comments without any user interaction beyond entering your login.
  • Infinite comment stream, meaning that on your Edit Comments page when you delete or spam a comment using the AJAX links under each comment it will bring in another comment in the background so you always have 20 items on the page. (I know it sounds geeky, but try it!)
  • We now protect you from activating a plugin or editing a file that will break your blog.
  • Core plugin and filter speed optimizations should make everything feel a bit more snappy and lighter on your server.
  • We’ve added a hook for WYSIWYG support in a future version of Safari.

Yay! Okay, I didn’t type the above, you can read more from WordPress.org blog. //beconfused will be down for an upgrade at 2 AM SGT. It would be a quick update, probably 5 minutes of downtime.

Download the new WordPress 2.2 now.

[Just a tiny note: Update is complete and everything's working quite fine.]

Are you blogging sensitively?

Uncategorized

I was reading New Paper and something caught my attention, the news is a little old already, hahaa…

There was this girl, Debra koh (14), who drown last week in the Sungei Pandan canal. She was with 3 other classmates and it was raining. They placed all their cellphones into a bag. They were tossing their bag around when the bag with their phones fell into the canal. Debra and her friends tried to recover the bag. Debra Koh drowned while attempting to recover the bag.

But I’m not here to talk much about Debra since this incident is quite dated already. A blogger who calls herself Tian Tian blogged that Debra deserves to die. She also claims that Debra whacked her previously and was a trouble-maker. This insensitive act comes with a punishment; she was confronted by 20 teens, kicked and slapped 20 times according to the New Paper report.

Always be careful of what you blog about and be sensitive. Some people treat blogging like writing an entry in the diary. You can be as egoistic, self centered and insensitive about everyone in your diary but you can’t do the same for blogging. When you blog, what you’re doing is publishing text online for anyone who may find your website. At least be sensitive to religions, races, misfortunes and so on, it’s kinda like basic blogging etiquette.

There are things that I swore I would not blog much about:

# Religion. Too sensitive. I’m a Christian but I do not want to get myself involved in religion disputes.
# Races. Very serious offence locally (Singapore that is). If you have a racist joke, think twice before publishing it.
# Real friends. I do not want to make too much mention of friends because I felt it’s invading their privacy. I learnt lessons the hard way.
# Regional politics. Well, you know what I mean, hahaa… I don’t want to comment on regional politics, it’s messy and might just get you into trouble if you get the facts wrong.
# Rants. I think the internet is full of junk already and ranting about not being able to get tickets for a sold-out concert - well, it’s just too insignificant. No one online would be interested in your rants.

So be careful guys. Blog smartly and sensitively.

Side note: Tian Tian removed the offending post and replace it with an apology. My condolences to Debra Koh.

U.S. Army makes it harder for troops to blog

Uncategorized

The U.S. Army has ordered soldiers to stop posting to blogs or sending personal e-mail messages, without first clearing the content with a superior officer.

Their concerns are mainly security leaks such as deployment timings, locations, secret documents etc.. There can be sensitive information that the bloggers post that may pose danger to troops too.

In Singapore, we don’t really have such a rule, almost everybody can blog what they want I guess. However, I heard there is this case of bad-mouthing the unit they are in. I shan’t provide the details but it happened and the person involved was punished.

Such a case is unfortunate as many people use blogs to vent their anger and share with their friends. I haven’t seen the blog, I heard it has been taken down already. There goes freedom of expression I guess… I’m not sure if the person tried to post untrue things about his company.

What do you guys think? Is it okay to bad-mouth your company or unit?

13 little things that make a geek happy

Uncategorized

For the most part, it does not take much to make a geek’s day!

read more | digg story

For me, it’s rather simple.

5 little things that would make me say yay

  1. The moment there is a price drop in any computer parts. I’m such a cheapskate, hehee…
  2. When I have an actual comment. Yeah, a real comment is not one that tells me about Viagra and anal sex.
  3. When I can get rid of all the tabs on my Opera browser. I open a lot of tabs and do not close them until I finish the whole task. Sometimes a particular website can be opened for a couple of weeks.
  4. Checking my statistics. Well, that usually make my day. I’m just happy to look at numbers I guess.
  5. When something related to the software I use comes up. I get excited over developments of Windows Live Messenger, Opera, WordPress, Adobe products and Windows Vista.

Lao Zha Bor’s Rap (with Eng Subtitles)

Kinda remind me of the Boost Mobile advertisement.

Anyway, Lao Zha Bor does arcade, blog and webcaming. That’s one rather cool grandma.

Blogging urges when in camp

Uncategorized

I was doing some calculation and I realize that I just have to go back to camp 40 days more. That made my day. It’s amazing how I can smile like an idiot looking at a calendar in the MRT train.

I’ll be returning to camp on Tuesday I think. I’ll stay till next Sunday morning. I probably won’t be blogging during camp time. I’m not comfortable doing blogging there.

I think I’m addicted to blogging. Sometimes I walk around camp and just feel like blogging about something, taking a picture (no I didn’t bring in a camera) or quote a particular friend who said something nonsensical. I couldn’t. I just tell myself, “hmmmp, I’ll blog about it when I’m out of camp.”

And I forget.

If you found this blog, keep it hush hush!

Uncategorized

It has come to my notice that a few of my friends has found my web site. It wasn’t my intention to let too many people know about this. Just read and don’t spread that I have a blog.

Keep it a secret

I’ll tell more people when I’m ready.

Thank you so much!
