Joke: If you were President what’s the first thing you do?

politics

Saw this at Pastebin through Reddit:

I recently asked my friends’ little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, ‘If you were President what would be the first thing you would do? ‘

She replied, ‘I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.’

Her parents beamed.

‘Wow…what a worthy goal.’ I told her, ‘But you don’t have to wait until you’re President to do that.. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and rake my yard, and I’ll pay you $50.

Then I’ll take you over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out, and you can give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house. ‘

She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, ‘ Why doesn’t the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?

I said, ‘Welcome to the Republican Party.’

Her parents still aren’t speaking to me.

Sarah Palin to Resign As Governor

politics

And so Sarah Palin resigns. She made mistakes. I don’t think they’re huge mistakes but well, anyway, here’s the news:

Palin to Resign As Governor, Citing Probes, Family Needs

The announcement that she would step down by the end of July, with 18 months left in her first term, stunned the political establishment, providing an endpoint to this chapter of her career and fueling speculation about her future plans.

Palin said she arrived at her decision in part to protect her family, which has faced withering criticism and occasional mockery, and to escape ethics probes that have drained her family’s finances and hampered her ability to govern. She said leaving office is in the best interest of the state and will allow her to more effectively advocate for issues of importance to her, including energy independence and national security.

Palin, 45, said that she knew she would not run for reelection as governor and that she did not want to be a “lame duck” merely for the sake of serving out the remainder of her term.

…some lawmakers and activists in Alaska have been doing “everything they can to stymie her progress” and that Palin determined she could no longer “make significant change in the state.”

Recent Alaska polls put Palin’s approval rating in the low to mid-50s, a far cry from her high of about 90 percent.

Palin said her children encouraged her to leave office, in part because they were upset at seeing their little brother, 14-month-old Trig, who has Down syndrome, “mocked and ridiculed by some pretty mean-spirited adults.” She said her decision had been in the works “for a while” and was based on prayer and talking with her family.

Cuba condemns Honduras coup as ‘criminal, brutal’

politics

“This coup has removed a legitimate and constitutional government simply for wanting to carry out a consultation … in Honduras there is only one constitutional government, one constitutional president who should return immediately without conditions to the palace,” Rodriguez said.

Cuba condemns Honduras coup as ‘criminal, brutal’

Cuba on Sunday condemned the military coup in Honduras as “criminal, brutal” and demanded the immediate return to office of deposed leftist President Manuel Zelaya.

The Honduran army ousted Zelaya and exiled him on Sunday in Central America’s first military coup since the Cold War, after he upset the military by proposing an extension of his four-year term in office.

“I denounce the criminal, brutal character of this coup,” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez told a news conference in Havana.

Zelaya is viewed by Cuba’s communist leadership as a leftist ally and former Cuban leader Fidel Castro had expressed backing for his efforts to hold an unofficial public vote on Sunday to gauge support for his plan to hold a November referendum on allowing presidential re-election.

“This coup has removed a legitimate and constitutional government simply for wanting to carry out a consultation … in Honduras there is only one constitutional government, one constitutional president who should return immediately without conditions to the palace,” Rodriguez said.

A note from President Obama

politics

U.S. President Barack Obama turned on the charm at an event in Wisconsin when an audience member told the president that his daughter Kennedy was missing school to come hear Obama speak about healthcare reform. One 10-year-old Wisconsin girl has a rock-solid excuse for missing the last day of school: a personal note to her teacher from President Barack Obama.
