What happen to me

The past year, I’ve been really busy with school and work. I barely have the mood to update the blog. When I am free I spend most of my time in front of the computer sometimes just trying to cheer myself up. And my slow host also killed my interest in blogging.

But today I had enough and migrated. A new server and with lots of little things to fix. My age old theme, the 200+ unanswered emails. I’m sorry. I won’t answer back the emails but I promise to answer them from now on.

Things are getting better and I have this bit of positivity about life again.

As for beconfused, I guess that would convert to more posts and better content.

I love the new automatic upgrade feature, it’s updates WordPress so easily.

2.7.1, the first 2.7 maintenance release, is now available. 2.7.1 fixes 68 tickets. You can automatically upgrade from 2.7 to 2.7.1 via the Tools->Upgrade menu, or you can download the package and upgrade manually.

Posts per page set to 7

Title says it all. I like the number 7. So posts per page is changed to 7.

I happen to think that 7 is the perfect number for viewing blog entries. Not too much, not too little. I can’t stand it when some blogs have like 20 posts per page. That said, I actually prefer RSS feeds to offer 20.

Anyway, in case you’re wondering why I am posting so much, I am trying to push a certain post lower.

I just realized you can’t mention the word upskirter on your front page or Google won’t give you any ads. Opps.

But it’s interesting how their algorithm works. I guess it’s best for the advertisers too. Probably don’t want to be associated with their lewd words.

Mentioning the f word seems to have impact on ads too.

Changes to all my permalinks

In order to make things neater, all my permalinks are changed. The new format removes the /blog/ from all URLs. After 4 years of blogging, I finally figured it doesn’t make sense.

I originally intended beconfused to be more than a blog but now I just want it to be a blog.

Here’s the mod_rewrite. Maybe you’d find it useful.

RewriteRule ^blog/(.*)$ /$1 [R=301,L]

A new theme change is coming but it was held up because I was really busy. I don’t really have time to complete the blog layout. I tested it and it is more or less working fine. It still has a couple of flaws. The new theme would be whitish and grayish, a lighter feel basically. I think it’s a good break from this layout.

I probably would deploy the layout this weekend, and complete it in the coming week. It’s an ongoing work in progress. It’s getting tiring to change a blog layout these days. It upsets many of my previous postings and I had to do a few string replaces in my database to make things look the way they should.

Eventually, I’ll do a rewrite on my images too. But that is something I will do in 2009, not this year definitely.

My little experiment with Media Temple

Once in a while Media Temple would send me a mail telling me that my database is overloaded or something and place me into a ’special’ program for 3 days where I get special utilities to manage the database. You will stop feeling special after they send four or five such things.

It makes me wonder how bad can I hit the database. I run this blog and a couple of other things using my Media Temple account and, base on analytics software (I use Google), this blog is most visited site among the sites hosted in my account.

I already run WP super cache, set it to use cache for 12 hours. It didn’t work. Media Temple returns to complain about my database again. And the analysis tools they provide is unable to give me any information on how to improve the database.

Eventually I decide to just ignore it. And a couple of months passed and they stopped complaining which is great. I love it when I don’t have email. So I decide to do an experiment:

I switch off caching.

So no caching, calls the database like crazy, see what happens. Two and a half weeks has passed, no email from Media Temple (I feel so lonely). The database have higher number of queries, my GPU is depleted at a greater speed, but no email.

My visitors didn’t drop last I check. So I presume… Media Temple’s database are more tolerant already. Previously, they’ve been hit by some technical issues. I probably won’t leave Media Temple just yet. I’ll wait-and-see. But I don’t think I have confidence to up my account to a better plan with them.

They asked me why people blog and I tried to answer

I was talking a little about blogging today and I was mentioning to this 2 friends how some people blog about everything – cam whoring, pictures of food, daily activities, conversations with friends and er, more cam whoring. They totally don’t understand blogging. Actually the idea of blogging, or broadcasting of thoughts, it’s sometimes just for this feeling of satisfaction, of encouragement, of someone caring about what you do.

I blog for a mixture of reasons. But one of the main reason is satisfaction. I get thrilled to see visitors and it makes me happy that the article I posted actually helped them. I used to post more personal stuff but after a while I just realized that nobody’s really interested I guess. Eventually I switched to funny stuff that I see everyday that made me smile. And I want to remember the moments that I feel happy seeing a YouTube video, angry that the world isn’t fair, proud when people find my tutorials useful.

And thus I blog. It’s hard to describe the feeling. I just concluded to them that they should try it. Try blogging for a little while, get your friends to see your blog. It’s quite a good feeling for me and it may be for you too.
