Been kinda busy lately therefore not really blogging. I have so much things I wanted to say but don’t have the time to. I’ve been busy with my assignments, the Java assignment is done, yet not done. Hanging in the middle. My E-business module is largely about research which I am quite good at.
And then there is work which I code with ActionScript:
(Coding with ActionScript.)
Also busy with this work which I code with a coffee cup as you can see:
(Development with coffee cup, you just have to move the cup around and the IDE would start constructing. They call that scaffolding.)
Next week would be better. Schedules are tight and my reading has stopped too. Coming week would be prelims for my university. But let’s look at the brighter side shall we? That means semester is ending!
Sun Microsystems will plunk down $1 billion to buy MySQL, the maker of a popular open-source database.
Sun said Wednesday that it will pay about $800 million in cash for MySQL’s privately held stock and will assume about $200 million worth of options. MySQL CEO Marten Mickos will join Sun’s senior executive team after the transaction closes.
The acquisition is a bold move for Sun, which has embraced open-source software and development practices in an effort to garner more revenue from its software business. Until now, it has sold support services for a competing open-source database, PostgreSQL.
Company executives said they will continue to support PostgreSQL and continue to partner with database giant Oracle.
MySQL, founded in 1995, is one of the most successful open-source companies. It’s part of the popular combination of open-source development products referred to as LAMP, for Linux, Apache Web server, MySQL and the PHP development language, which is broadly used on the Internet and within companies.
However, the acquisition also comes with some potential difficulties. “This raises a whole bunch of issues concerning Sun’s close ties to Oracle, as well as their investment in PostgreSQL,” Zachary said.
Paying a billion for an open-source firm? Even though MySQL do have some commercial packages, it still doesn’t seem to be a good buy. Sun seems like an old and tired company these days.
I always thought MySQL and Java had some similarities - both their websites are confusing. Go to Sun Java website and if you’re not an existing Java developer, you won’t know how to start programming Java. Likewise, if you go to MySQL, you’ll take 5 minutes to hunt down the free MySQL. They already have things in common before they even start. A good omen?
Because the whole Sun Java website is like a labyrinth. I just don’t know where to get my stuff. I just want a Java compiler and when I am at Java.sun.com I just don’t know what to get.
They have things like:
Java SE
Java EE
Java ME
NetBeans IDE
Web Services
Java Software
The whole process is just so alien to me. I am just trying to find the latest Java compiler which is the 6.0 one. I saw their versioning system too. They had 1.2, 2.0, 5.0 and all the different updates. Seriously, it’s just too confusing.
I don’t think any non-Java developer actually know what’s going on. A bit of reading led me to figure that they separate stuff to Enterprise levels and so on. It took me a while to figure what I want is Java SE Development Kit 6 (JDK) which includes the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and command-line development tools that are useful for developing applets and applications.
I am aware that Sun has NetBeans and I am just wondering if they’re making compiler downloads harder to encourage people to get NetBeans. The whole website is just horrible. Oh yeah, by the way, Sun Microsystem, your Java website suits the 800 x 600 crowd. Your website is just half the width of my screen. With more and more websites suiting 1024 width, well, consider doing that too.
By the way, I’ll be studying Java in school. I know nothing about Java but it always seemed like the tired and boring programming language. Ruby on Rails sounded cool but I never had time to play around with it. I frequent a lot of pro-Ruby websites and I somehow got psycho-ed into thinking how great Ruby on Rails really is.
Sun’s Java is going open source. Sun has been a supporter of open source but we never did see Java become open source itself.

Following through on a promise it made earlier this month, Sun confirmed at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco Tuesday that it would open the source code to Java, but said it needs the community’s help in getting it done to prevent fragmentation of the technology.
“The question is not whether we will open-source Java, the question is how,” Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz said during his opening keynote. His statement followed a similar one by Rich Green, Sun’s executive vice president of software, but neither provided any specific timeline for the move.
Finally, Java becomes open source. Frankly speaking, I don’t think this would cause much of an impact. Java is already popular and making it open source is perhaps just a movement to shut the critics up. Plus, some people actually thought Java is open source already.
My internship is over. I have many plans but too little time to fulfil. Unfortunately, even before I go into fulfilling these tasks during my holiday. I need to finish some stuff from my internship. I have lots of files and need to do housekeeping and return them to my company. It’s a responsibility kinda thing. I am willing to help out my supervisor to do this.
Anyway, my plans are quite ambitious and I doubt that I have to time to fulfil. First of all, it’s something to do with my blog. I plan to roll out an update in the design. I plan to code my own custom plugin to fit a particular function that I shan’t mention at the moment. I can’t find it anywhere you see.
And I agreed to help my friend put up a web site, it’s joint project. I won’t give the details on that though. Not that it is supposed to be a secret - well, nothing is finalized in the project. I can’t speak much except that it is a portal for Ragnarok Online and is likely to use ASP.NET engine and coded in Visual Basic .NET.
I’ll talk about Excel and share a good news with you guy soon. I am probably going to share experiences regarding Excel with some of my polytechnic’s lecturers. It would be done with Desmond if it is agreed upon. I really have no idea how to do this, frankly speaking.
I am going to learn Java. I haven’t gotten the compiler and stuff but I’ll be getting it soon. The reason why I choose to learn Java is due to it’s popularity. I heard much about it and wish to understand more about Java. I hope it’d be beneficial for my work in future too.
And of course, needless to mention, it’s anime. I am going to watch anime. I have quite a lot of anime to watch. I borrowed some DVDs too. I gotten myself Mary Poppins which I’ll watch tomorrow (that’s not an anime by the way).
