Review: Nacho Libre (2006)

reviews

Nacho Libre is another movie starring Jack Black, directed Jared Hess. The movies Jack Black starred in seemed to have this loser-turn-hero style and Nacho Libre doesn’t change any of that.

Movie poster

As usual, we’ll let the pictures do the story-telling.

Nacho is raised in a Mexican monastery orphanage and he is quite fat.

Loving God and the children, Nacho works in the orphanage to cook food for the kids.

He likes wrestling and decided to give it a go at Lucha Libre - a wrestling tourament - to earn some money.

Sister Encarnacion looks pretty here. Nacho seems interested.

Well, unfortunately not all his co-workers think highly of wrestling as it is considered sinful. Would Nacho be able to convinced them and make the kids at the orphanage happy again? Likely.

Anyway, I like Nacho Libre, it’s fun to watch, I haven’t gotten sick of that loser-to-hero formula. The plot is straight forward, predictable and at many times nonsensical. Sister Encarnacion (played by Ana de la Reguera) is perhaps the most beautiful nun that you’d ever see. Nacho Libre deserves 3.5 upon 5 for all of the above.

[Just a month to ORD! Finally leaving the crazy place.]

Review: Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny

reviews

I was walking in Vivocity, one of Singapore’s larger shopping mall, with my cousin when we just decided that we should watch a film in Vivocity because we heard only good things about the movie theatre. And so we walked in and wondered what film to watch.

And this secondary school kid just walked in front of me, “you want free tickets?”

“Huh?”

“We can’t watch the film because it’s M-18.”

“Oh okay,” I was confused for a while. He hands out two of his five tickets and thanked me. “Thank you so much,” I said to them as I was handed the tickets. “Wow, that’s really nice of you.”

I looked at the tickets and they were complementary tickets to the film:

Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny.

(Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny)

I know seen the poster of Tenacious D before but had no idea what it’s about. I do know Jack Black from School of Rock though. Anyway my cousin and I watched Tenacious D without any idea what it’s about…

And realize that it is about rock music. It starts off with a blast, we really enjoyed the humor at the beginning but things went down slowly. It seems to be about two losers trying to win an open mic contest. Their journey is interrupted by the satanic Pick of Destiny which is this guitar pick made of the devil’s tooth. It supposed to let you play great music.

I don’t quite get the humor of the film later on and probably enjoyed the Ben Stiller and Meat Loaf cameo more than watching the long and nonsensical history of Tenacious D. The music is nice but it almost seemed like it is forcefully fit into the movie. It’s as if they had to create one whole scene just for the song. Sorry, in short, the film is not good. For the great cameos, okay humor and its vulgarities, the film gets 2.5 out of a maximum of 5 stars.

Sorry, I just don’t get it. Not a movie that I would have paid for. Not that I did of course. ;)

Review: School of Rock

reviews

I’ve just watched School of rock. And it really does rock, especially the school children themselves. It’s been a while since I last watched a movie and this film fills in quite nicely.

School of rock.

(School of rock.)

It’s a basic feel good movie with Jack Black as the not-so-cool rock star, Dewey Finn. He pretended to be a licensed teacher and entered a school with rich brats who - not surprisingly - don’t quite like him. Neither did Finn like the kids, he is just there for “temp-ing” in order to get more money.

Soon he discovers the kids’ musical talent and secretly started a rock band within the classrooms (equiped with sound proof walls and electric guitars). He then lied to the kids that this is part of a graded project and they have to be in some band competition.

So, School of rock - the rock band with the kids and Finn as the lead singer - is established within the classroom walls. While Finn is enjoying himself, he has to hide it from the principal and the kids’ parents.

Overal, School of Rock is an entertaining comedy. It kinda reminds me of Sister Act and Swing Girls. But I still prefer Sister Act and Swing Girls. School of Rock does, however, fills the gap since not much of these movies are around these days. The movie does make an effort to be unpredictable it would seem, but still you can roughly guess what’s next in the movie if you try enough.

“What kind of a sick school is this? Hmm? As long as I’m here, there will be no grades or gold stars or demerits. We’re gonna have recess all the time.” Well, School of Rock receives 3 stars out of a maximum 5.
