US comic George Carlin dies at 71: report
WASHINGTON (AFP) — Irreverent US comedian George Carlin, who became known as a voice of the 1970s counterculture and was one of the country’s best known funny men, died on Sunday aged 71, US media reported.
The Grammy award winner, whose career spanned five decades, died of heart failure, his publicist Jeff Abraham told the New York Times.
Carlin had a history of heart problems and passed away in Santa Monica, California after checking into the hospital with chest pains.
He won four Grammy Awards, including one for his 1972 comedy recording “FM & AM,” in which he combined his older, more conventional material that entertained audiences in the 1950s and 60s, with his new, edgier and more controversial style.
Gray-bearded and often dressed in black casual attire, Carlin frequently admitted to drug use and shocked 1970s audiences with his hit “Seven Words That Can Never Be Said on Television.” (Source: AFP)
Well, if you perform out of the requirements of your job and benefit the community in China, you might just get a nice promotion.
China cop promoted for breastfeeding quake babies
BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese policewoman who breastfed babies orphaned during last month’s earthquake has been given a better job, prompting online protests that promotions should be awarded on merit, not merely for good deeds.
Jiang Xiaojuan, 30, left her own baby with her parents and took part in the disaster relief work, breastfeeding nine babies, earning her the nickname of “the police mum” in the press.
She has since been awarded titles of “hero and model police officer” and “excellent member of the Communist Party”, was appointed to the Communist Party of China Committee of the Jiangyou Public Security Bureau and became the bureau’s vice commissar, Xinhua news agency said on Saturday. While it does seemed strange, I kinda think she deserves it.
This was on Comcast’s Dating On Demand service under the category “One of a Kind.” Needs a husband to carry heavy loads and be obedient and brave. Not willing to fool around in a dragon cave again.
As the title says, Stephen Hawking turned down knighthood on principle. Today we see titles as some sort of recognition.
Professor Stephen Hawking has revealed that he turned down the offer of a knighthood over 10 years ago.
The Birthday Honours List 2008, released to coincide with the Queen’s official birthday, once again contained nothing for Hawking, which has been puzzling some observers for many years.
However, the scientist has released correspondence showing that he was approached with the offer of a knighthood over a decade ago but refused it on principle.
“Professor Hawking does not like titles. In fact he dislikes the whole concept of them,” a spokesman told The Times.
Professor Hawking has also revealed correspondence showing harsh criticism of what he sees as the UK government’s mismanagement of science funding.
Mixed Messages is a shop dropping intervention that critiques absurd and manipulative advertising language by re-labeling products in supermarkets and stores.
Shopdropping aka Droplifting: Beginner’s Guide to the Subversive Urban Art of Reverse Shoplifting
Shopdropping was probably the last kind of giving on most people’s minds as they shopped during the holiday season. Shopdropping, also known as droplifting, is the incredible act of reverse shoplifting: going into stores and putting things onto the shelves. Banksy is probably the best known shopdropper, famous for putting out his own subvertised versions of Paris Hilton’s CDs and hanging his subversive art in galleries.
It might not surprise you to learn that reactions to shopdropping or droplifting vary as much as approaches to it and reasons for doing it. Some people find it harmless and amusing while others find it shocking and disturbing. Shopdroppers who are caught are variously freed by confused police or held on charges related to destruction of property or even fraud. Reactions, criticisms or other shopdropping thoughts? Well, it would be interesting to see this in my country although it is illegal.
