My favorite feature in Gmail

Uncategorized

This is my favorite feature in Gmail:

Download all attachments in Gmail.

(Download all attachments in Gmail.)

It’s just a simple feature but it just saves so much time, clicking on the Download all attachment link in Gmail lets you, er, download all attachment. But you get it consolidated nicely in a ZIP file. It makes life so much easier.

Microsoft’s Windows Live Hotmail (name too long, consider rename) does not have that feature and it is my main complaint. Last time I’ll click and download the bloody attachments one by one. I’ll have to wait, download, save, wait, download, save, wait…

Now I just forward the mail from Live Hotmail to Gmail and download the attachment through Gmail. It’s a simple yet well-thought feature. What a life saver when you have like 10 attachments!

And recently Gmail increased the email space limit to 6 GB. It now says that I am using 625 MB (10%) of your 6182 MB. And if you’re wondering how come I store 600 MB worth of emails? Oh, it’s just those mail I forward from Hotmail to Gmail so that I can download all the attachments.

Sad to say, as much as I love Gmail, I still rely quite a lot on Hotmail, especially with friends. I use Gmail for work, but all the mails my friends send me to go to my Hotmail.

Vilayanur Ramachandran: A journey to the center of your mind

Uncategorized

Vilayanur Ramachandran explains what actually happens in the brain and it’s actually easy enough to understand. And he’s quite humorous too. I wish my science lecturers are half as entertaining.

In a wide-ranging talk, Vilayanur Ramachandran explores how brain damage can reveal the connection between the internal structures of the brain and the corresponding functions of the mind. He talks about phantom limb pain, synesthesia (when people hear color or smell sounds), and the Capgras delusion, when brain-damaged people believe their closest friends and family have been replaced with imposters.

Vilayanur Ramachandran: A journey to the center of your mind

About Vilayanur Ramachandran

Neurologist V.S. Ramachandran looks deep into the brain’s most basic mechanisms. By working with those who have very specific mental disabilities caused by brain injury or stroke, he can map functions of the mind to physical structures of the brain.

Is it necessary to break down an analyzation process

Uncategorized

I’m spending quite a bit of time on university assignments and now I’m sitting in front of the computer wondering if everything really that worth it. Is gaining that little bit extra mark that worth it. The deadline is January 2, 2008.

I have assignments for e-business, Java and a computing course.

My e-business module is quite screwed. I can’t really put things to words. I know how things work roughly here and there, the lessons are interesting, concepts are quite refreshing generally. Unfortunately it is a quarter filled with common-sense knowledge. They are trying to document common-sense step-by-step which is wasting lots of time and trees.

They had this thing called general system analysis process where they cleverly broken down the analyzation process into 4 steps:

  1. Defining the problem
  2. Describing the situation in enough depth
  3. Designing potential improvements
  4. Deciding what to do

But isn’t this just normal thought process? Just like, I am late for work. So I start thinking why I am late for work and I realized it’s because I miss my bus. And next time I’ll reach the bus stop earlier. I decide to wake earlier to go take a bus.

I’m just amazed how they can break a thinking process into a flow diagram.

Okay, enough ranting. I’ll go finish up my e-business assignment now. I’ve finished the Java assignment already, that’s something to be relieved about at least.

WordPress 2.3.2 released!

Uncategorized

Well I know it’s hard to upgrade and all, WordPress 2.3.2 is “an urgent security release”. So you may consider updating it to fix your draft post exposure and leaking of WordPress table names.

WordPress 2.3.2 is an urgent security release that fixes a bug that can be used to expose your draft posts. 2.3.2 also suppresses some error messages that can give away information about your database table structure and limits and stops some information leaks in the XML-RPC and APP implementations. Get 2.3.2 now to protect your blog from these disclosures.

As a little bonus, 2.3.2 allows you to define a custom DB error page. Place your custom template at wp-content/db-error.php. If WP has a problem connecting to your database, this page will displayed rather than the default error message.

Download the new WordPress 2.3.2 now.

Go here to view the changes between WordPress 2.3.2 and WordPress 2.3.1. Read more details on this WordPress update.

//beconfused will not be affected. I think. Probably 1 second of downtime starting from now.

How do I plan my time these days

Uncategorized

I’ve grown to be more flexible already. I maintain a to-do list of the day and never plan my day like you would in an event schedule plan.

It really didn’t make sense after a while, planning things this way:

  • 8 AM, wake up and blah blah
  • 9 AM, start to do work on Flash
  • 11 AM, read a nerd book
  • 12 PM, go for lunch

I rarely follow them, what I plan usually turned out this way:

  • 6 AM, somehow woke up for no reason and have nothing to do
  • 7 AM, since I’m on track I’ll go for a bit of breakfast
  • 8 AM, so filling now. Tries to work some Flash
  • 9 AM, realizes it’s unproductive and try to read a nerd book
  • 10 AM, falls asleep reading nerd book
  • 12 PM, my brother wake me up for lunch

It just didn’t work out at all. These days, I have a to-do list, ranked in priority:

  1. Finish section A for e-business assignment
  2. Work on at least 1 question on computing assignment
  3. Work on Flash
  4. Read nerd book
  5. Renew nerd book
  6. Optional: Have breakfast

Okay, the ‘have breakfast’ part is lame but you get my point. It does kinda help me get organized and nowadays I sleep as and when I like, read as and when I like and work as and when I like. If it’s not productive, I usually go to bed. It kinda messed up my sleep cycles to a certain extends, I’m usually well and awake at 2 in the morning programming. It’s kinda bad for health I heard but things seem to get done.

And when things get done, I get happier as the result. And happier persons do get healthy right?

There is this thing my friend was telling me about liver repairs occurring between 12 to 3 AM in the morning when you’re sleeping. And once you missed it, your liver gets poorer as the days pass by. Ever heard of this? Can anybody verify this?

Picture: Say no to plastic bags, waste paper instead

Uncategorized

Saw this in Singapore Management University’s toilet. Never really like the idea of facing a campaign notice when peeing, but well, this method of promotion is getting more popular these days.

Say no to plastic bags, waste paper instead.

(Say no to plastic bags, waste paper instead.)

Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) made me stayed at AIDS awareness posters for a month when I pee. One day, one day, advertisements will get into the toilets. It will not just be public service ads.

And you know… About that flyer, I really don’t get it why they choose to put the word ‘Campaign’ and underlined it instead of putting more emphasis on saying no to plastic bags. It’s almost as if someone wanted to create a campaign to tell everyone that they have a campaign going more so than creating environmental awareness. Strange sighting in toilet.
