Think you don't have to worry about the balance as I suspect collecting $200 deposits is already their main business model. LOL

Forego the $200 deposit. Usually the reason behind a deposit is so that if you decide to cancel the transaction, the seller gets to keep that money. It's sort of their risk-guarantee policy.

So yeah, as a customer, you can forego the deal. I hope there wasn't any signing of documents involved. Pertaining to the $1k that she paid in advance for you guys, that one's her problem. I think it wasn't part of the original deal.

First order of the day- remain calm when talking to them. You can get pissed off later if you can't get your way.

Just call them to let them know that your mom changed her mind and won't be buying the set of pots and pans anymore. Since it is such a hot commodity, with an award winning design, and cannot be purchased just by anyone, they should be able to sell it easily to some other person. As this was an honest mistake and your mom really regrets making the purchase, you'd like the refund of the $200 deposit and you can come down to personally get it. Sorry for their trouble.

If they hem and haw and say its not possible blah blah, remind them of their sales pitch again- that this was not for sale in the first place, as they told you.

If they still refuse to give the deposit back, let them know your unhappiness with the way the transaction happened, as when you were there, they kept telling you that it was not for sale so why did it become for sale after you left.

Still refuse? Bring up CASE, and follow through. A lot of people don't follow through- do it.

You should have chased them out of the house. This kinid of sales people who do house visits usually use hard sell tactics.

They usually tell their target it limited edition not available outside etc. Which usually is not the case. Complain to the company and lodge a report to CASE?

Hey, my father got himself in such a fix once, for some security system subscriptions. What I did was to call the office and said that at the point when my father signed the contract, he wasn't expecting to pay so much and we do not need the system. I basically refuse to pay for any remaining amount.

There should be a number for you to call their accounts or credit department and let them know that whatever the case you ain't going to pay any more, you do not mind forfeiting the $200 deposit. Dont worry about the receipt cos they aren't going to take you to court or anything like that...

Whats the name of the company? Cos my mum was approached with a deal like that too.

Farinelli: Actually forfeiting the 200 wouldn't be that bad. But there is a receipt given to us detailing we have to pay the full amount. I'm not sure if the receipt can be in effect and be used against us. The 200, my mother already assumed she lost the money. She just don't wish the pay the remaining $3000.

Hell with the 200 la. It's peanuts compared to what you're gonna have to pay if you see the payments through.

Thanks lancerlord and viv, I've did a little more research and discover that there is a 3-day cooling period for such purchases. :D

No point being upset now. Everybody makes mistakes.

If a sales agreement had already been signed, then it is difficult to get back the deposit. Only thing left is to stop the purchase from proceeding.

Try talking to the salesladies to terminate the agreement. But be prepared for any stubborn tactics from them. Once the agreement is void, remember to destroy or at least get back the original sales agreement.

Good luck.
