Someone just request I fix the computer as she claims it has been infected with virus or malware. That person told me that she did not visit a pornographic website to gain that piece of malware. And I assured her that it’s probably just an email you shouldn’t have opened.

An antivirus program is not enough. An antimalware program is not necessary the best method of deterrence either. Asides burning and drinking Ang kon hus, people should take note of the files they open:
* If you use emails and open attachment, make sure you look at the extension carefully! Only open attachments such as JPG, GIF, WMA, MP3, XLS (Excel), DOC from your trusted sources.
* Never enable Microsoft Office macros from your trusted sources unless you are recommended to do so.
* Always choose Custom installation during an installation to learn what is being installed. Make sure no problem installs toolbars that you don’t want in your browser. They can advertise it like the best toolbar in the world, you do not need them.
* Remember to update your virus definitions and your Windows updates.
* The best way of transfering files is really to just send necessary files through emails or IM. Avoid using flash drives from your collegues as they might have been infected.
* Never install software from the web browser unless your tech saavy collegues are also using that.
Once your computer is affected by a malware, it may be quite hard to clear. Your tech support people might even have to delete your important files to clear the virus. So protect your own computer, your work depends on it.
