Several of Nafcom’s comments are eaten up by the hungry Akismet plugin in WordPress. Now, I am trying Akismet Worst Offenders Extension to see if it works better.
Akismet saved me a lot of time maintain a blog and I can’t just deactivate it. Once deactivated, I’ll get hundreds of spam per day! And that’s just too hard to maintain.
I’ll hope the plugin modification would help. If you’re sure you comment and yet your comment just doesn’t appear, it is either moderated or caught by Akismet spam filter.
Akismet tends to catch false positives. I’m annoyed but can’t do much except to visit my list my comments and marked the legitimate comments off the spam list. Hopefully Akismet would improve soon.
If only there aren’t spammers…

@Mr Dew: Thank you, at least I can comment again!
by Nafcom (Jun 11, 2006 at 6 PM)Isn’t there a plugin asking for a confirmation code to enter before posting?
I do this with my blog and I never got any spam since I have activated it!
Yes, but I don’t quite like having to type that to comment so… Well, that’s one way, but it’s like punishing people who comment. Spam commentors should receive the punishment instead, not the legitimate ones.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 11, 2006 at 9 PM)Mr Dew: Okay, I will stick with it, though
by Nafcom (Jun 11, 2006 at 10 PM)It’s very effective though, but it’s my last resort.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 12, 2006 at 6 PM)Mr Dew: So you feel offended becuase you have to enter a code to comment on my blog?
by Nafcom (Jun 13, 2006 at 1 AM)Nope, I got used to it. That used to be the standard method of deterring spammers and perhaps it still is. But I am going for a more friendly way of commenting. My belief is to keep inconvinience at a minimal level while denying people from performing wrong acts such as spamming.
But the idea of a confirmation code is acceptable for me. It’s just like validating that you’re above 16 in a NC16 film. It’s a bit more of a hassle but I see that as a need in your case.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 13, 2006 at 2 AM)Mr Dew: Well, I could switch it to moderated but I do not like that people have to wait till their comments appear!
by Nafcom (Jun 13, 2006 at 7 AM)That’s true, I don’t like that too. I deploy several tools, banned keywords, new visitor moderation, more than 2 links in your comment will cause your comment to be moderated, and Akismet spam filter.
I moderate because some of the spam actually slip through Akismet’s filters. Akismet catches about 200 spam a day and misses about 5 leaving it to moderation.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 13, 2006 at 10 AM)Mr Dew: I see, your blog is just too good and too famous, lol!
by Nafcom (Jun 13, 2006 at 4 PM)Nah, not true. Spammer love to target WordPress blogs.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 13, 2006 at 5 PM)Mr Dew: Ah, thanks for the info, didn’t know
by Nafcom (Jun 14, 2006 at 1 AM)Most WordPress blogs don’t have those validation and Akismet. They just spam and spam.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 14, 2006 at 7 AM)Mr Dew: So people don’t care and don’t care
by Nafcom (Jun 17, 2006 at 4 PM)It’s not that they don’t care. They don’t know how to get the API code from WordPress. Some of course, just can’t be bother and prefers deleting stuff themselves. WordPress has other plugins too, some just use a validation or some spam karma tool.
by Mr. Dew (Jun 19, 2006 at 8 AM)Mr Dew: I see! Thanks for the explanation!
by Nafcom (Jun 19, 2006 at 9 AM)The problem with “entering a code” is that it can’t stop trackback spam (as Matt mentions). Solutions that analyse the content can recognize spam without the user needing to prove their [a] humanity and [b] non-spammy-ness, so it’s easier for the user, and more effective for the site owner. This is why Akismet is so good, but the system can make mistakes. Hopefully my extension helps make these mistakes less likely because it simplifies the identification and feedback of false-positives, it also means less work for the site owner. Win-Win, I hope.
