Check out Microsoft’s contribution in journal searches. It’s pretty good so far really. I am quite surprise. It’s a beta right now and they only have 3 fields – Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Physics. Which is seriously not enough.

Give Windows Live Academic Search a try and you may be pleasently surprised that behind the horrible naming by the marketing department hides a pretty cool tool if you do need to research on science stuff. I tried, it works in Firefox, but it didn’t seem to work in Opera. I haven’t tried in Internet Explorer but being a Microsoft product, it should work there I think.

  1. yeah, what a retarded name,
I can totally see the potential behind this though. But they’d have to do a lot, they need to seriously increase the amount of sources and journals that are included as well as spread it to different fields as well. That’ll all amount to hefty fees to publishers I guess, but it would be such an awesome tool to have everything in one place.

When I was taking bio (I’m done!!), researching papers for peer reviewed stuff would mean having to search through like 4 or so seperate databases… And then, sometimes searching a result in that search in yes ANOTHER publishers site .. only to find that our school didn’t buy access to journals published in that year and all you get is the synopsis.

ARGGGG! just thinking aobut it gives me a headache!

  2. I know what you mean, pketh. I been through the same. I think we all gotten used to the idea that the Internet is free information galore.

Each time I need one of these articles, I just have to pay. That’s crazy. I don’t understand why am I paying so much for certain articles. It’s not just 20 bucks sometimes. It’s crazy. And the synopsis is just not enough information sometimes.

The research center I worked at in the past subscribe to a few of these journals but the whole logging in and out is too much of a hassle. And chances are still there that the research center didn’t subscribe to that site you need badly.

Perhaps it’s time for researchers to rethink about the whole idea of paid journals. It’s annoying, hard to index and is too expensive.
