Microsoft just released the beta version of Windows Internet Explorer 7 (previous known as Microsoft Internet Explorer). It’s Beta 2. I decided to give it a try since my Internet Explorer 6 is giving me so much crash problem. I don’t really bother that it would crash in Windows Internet Explorer 7 (WIE7 I suppose).

The new Windows Internet Explorer 7.

(The new Windows Internet Explorer 7. Click to see larger image.)

Indeed, WIE7 crashes lesser. At least it didn’t crash at the moment I read my web mail. In a way, WIE7 seems better. Unfortunately, my WIE7 is plagued with a horrible bug.

Oh no, the Dial-up connection dialog box just keeps popping up!

(Oh no, the Dial-up connection dialog box just keeps popping up!)

Everytime I surf the internet, the ‘Dial-up Connection’ dialog box just keeps popping up. Sure, it would auto reconnect. But it gets annoying. It just reconnects about 2 times or so each time I load something. And when loading Windows Live Messenger 8, it reconnects up to 10 times.

When it reconnects, the application focus shifts to the ‘Dial-up Connection’ dialog box and it disturbs you when you’re typing in another application.

As far as I checked, very few of them had this problem with Windows Internet Explorer. But it doesn’t stop me from wonder – how the hell do I solve this problem?! I did not see any possible solutions for it at the moment.

If you want to give a try to Windows Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview, you can download it here. It is free to try. You just need to be using a valid copy of Microsoft Windows XP. I am not sure about language-wise. I think you may need the English copy of Windows XP to test out this beta version.

If you do have the same problem and has some leads as to how to solve it, do comment. I love to solve that problem too. Asides this pesky bug, Windows Internet Explorer 7 is a fine browser and is up to standard to fight with Mozilla Firefox already. I love competitions.

Where CSS and web-standards are concerned, Firefox/Opera/Safari win hands down. No kidding. Some sites that worked fine in IE6, don’t cut it with IE7b2.

  3. pketh: Well… It doesn’t work as well as it did in Opera. I can see the text and stuff but it still doesn’t look right. I can’t see your background until I hover to the links. Don’t really know what’s wrong though. :(

Event Horizon: They do. But interface-wise, they’re ready. CSS-wise, they’re not. But web developers are the people who are concern about CSS problems, the normal users just don’t get what’s the fuss. While IE7 still don’t have the support granted in Firefox and Opera, it solves a couple of famous CSS problems. And the PNG transparency problem is solved! It’s about time anyway. There are still bugs here and there though, WIE7 crashes for me all of a sudden when I view my feeds, very annoying.

  6. Nafcom: The 64-bit guys are left out in many software. It’s kinda sad actually. But the next computer I purchase would probably be a 64-bit one. I’ll be getting one at around year 2007. No point getting it now since I’m usually in my camp anyway.

cockroach//è??è??: That’s good. It caused me some problems unfortunately. But my computer’s already quite screwed up before I install anyway. Well, I’m reinstalling my computer when I’m free.

  8. Mr Dew: Yes, it’s a pity, but IE7 Beta 2 will work in Windows XP 64Bit as you can see here:

    http://bink.nu/Article6076.bink :)

I aree with “No point getting it now since Iâ??m usually in my camp anyway.”

  9. Nafcom: Yeah, I’m looking forward to 64-bit though. I still hope for more driver support and software available that is optimized for 64-bit computing. I don’t like to be the first adopter it seems.

  10. Mr Dew: The driver support is almost ok, just with a few.
epson wrote me they will write a 64bit driver for my new scanner

    here are the 2 emails:_
    “Hello,

Sorry buti have mailed to Taiwan and they tell me that the manufactor of the
chip will not write any driver for it
So there will be no X64 driver for your card

    Met vriendelijke groet,
    Best regards,

    Leadtek Support”

    and Epson:

“Thank you for contacting the Epson Connection.

Epson is currently working on posting new 64 bit drivers in the near
future. Please check our website at http://www.epson.com periodically for new
    drivers.”

About too few 64bit prgs, I agree!

by Nafcom (Mar 4, 2006 at 10 AM)
  11. Doesn’t the Taiwan company help you write the 64bit driver? I thought it would only be part of customer service to do this extra bit for the customer. I don’t think changing a driver from 32 to 64 bit is actually that hard.

by Mr. Dew (Mar 5, 2006 at 1 AM)
  12. Mr Dew: There are only a couple of TV card chip producers and if the chip producing company denies to support 64bit, then it will be hard for Leadtek (and the other manufacturer using the same chip) to offer a X64 driver. I have sent a complaint email to Leadtek Taiwan yesterday, though.

(The European customer suppport is sitting in the Netherlands, as of yet, a German devision seems to be planned but choosing “Germany” only results into opening the English page of the European HQ in the Netherlands).

by Nafcom (Mar 5, 2006 at 2 AM)
  13. hmmmp… Alright, then you’re pretty much stuck there with a complaint letter. You actually spend quite a lot of time chasing these 64 bit things. I won’t do that actually. Why do you want to purchase a 64 bit initially by the way?

by Mr. Dew (Mar 5, 2006 at 8 AM)
  14. Mr Dew: Did I miss something? I already bought the Windows XP 64 Bit! (Originally it’s not for sale seperately, since Microsoft forbids that,. you can only get it together with a PC, but some mail traders over here sell it anyway, means the “System Builder” version which normally only PC producing companies get like Dell, etc.

Well, the 64bit is not my primary one, but I bought a 64bit CPU and a motherboard offering 64bit drivers (which is rare, but MSI supports 64bit, e.g.). Epson supports 64bit, Logitech does, ATI does too, so I had pretty good cards! :) when I bought WIndows XP Professional 64 Bit (or X64 as cmpanies prefer to call it).

  15. Mr Dew: Meanwhile got a reply from LeadTek Taiwan:

    “Dear Sir,

    Sorry for your bad experience.

We are really want to make it to run under Windows 64 bit os.
But the chipset manufuacturer stop to release 64bit driver for it.
We are very sorry for your inconvenient.

  16. Nafcom: I hope you get your driver. I don’t quite get why the chipset manufacturer just refuses to release the 64 bit driver, I guess they’re kinda lazy…

by Mr. Dew (Mar 11, 2006 at 1 AM)
  17. @Mr Dew: Yeah, I sent a complaint directly to eMPIA and wait for their statement!

Yep, I guess they are lazy, the used chipset (EM2800) is even not listed on their homepage

by Nafcom (Mar 11, 2006 at 5 AM)
  18. @Mr Dew: I have received a reply from eMPIA!

    “Hello,

Allow me to give you some background about your question.

Empia is a company supply chip to manufactures, like Leadtek…..others. and Leadtek is one of our good customer.

We do support 64 bit driver since half years ago. however. Every manufacture has their own schedule and reason to determine whether they shall and when they shall adopt 64 bit driver.

    1. it need to have 64 bit application software to go with the 64 bit driver. Only 64 bit driver does not give you any advantage.

Attached is our generic 64 bit driver. (64 bit driver is under AMD64 folder). but most likely. it will not work with your TV card which has EM2800 inside. (some modification need to be done by manufacture themself.) It will be best for you to continue check with Leadtek for 64 bit upgrade.

    Jeff”

by Nafcom (Mar 12, 2006 at 3 AM)
  19. hmmmp.. So it seems to be Leadtek’s fault to a certain extend. I hope the driver works for you now.

by Mr. Dew (Mar 13, 2006 at 7 PM)
  20. @Mr Dew: No, it doesn’t work, as presumed, the driver has to get modified first. I forwarded their email to LeadTek Taiwan! :D

by Nafcom (Mar 14, 2006 at 1 AM)
  21. success!!!:

    Dear Joerg,

Our developers are co-working with EMPIA about the 64bit driver.
    Thanks for your informations.
If any news release we will contact with you.

    Thanks again.

We have to ensure which model of yours.
After I got reply, I could forward this mail to our developers.

You can refer to attach picture, which one is yours? Blue or white?

    Awaiting for reply.

  25. Internet Explorer 7 soon for Windows XP 64 Bit!…

The Beconfused Blog recently reported about IE7, unfortunately I couldn’t do the same, since it does not work on Windows XP 64 Bit yet, this will change soon as you can read on Bink’s website!
But the sarcastic thing is; eventhough the Beta 2 of IE…

  26. Internet Explorer 7 Add-Ons…

A lot of sources report about about Internet Explorer 7 (as you can see here they don’t seem to have renamed it into Windows Explorer 7. Well, it’s pretty confusing, I guess we have to wait till the final to figure it out! :)

    But what nobody seem…

  27. This is two years later so probably all forgotten, but I can’t believe the people posting went off into a completely different discussion, ignoring the topic of the thread and the request for help in the topic. They suck.

Here’s something I ran into (two years too late, but anyway here it is):

Prevent Modem From Dialing When Starting Internet Explorer
Posted on Jan 04, 2008 under Internet Explorer Tips | No Comment
Question: I have my Internet through my cable company, but my modem dials whenever I try to go out to the Internet. It happens as soon as I open Internet Explorer.

Solution: IE is setup to use a dial-up connection. This setting needs to be disabled. Here’s how:

    1. In Internet Explorer click Tools > Internet Options… .

    2. Click the Connections tab.

    3. Check the radio button for Never dial a connection.
