Shucks! I’ve became a Sony customer.

Konica Minolta exits camera business – film and digital

Konica Minolta today stunned the industry by announcing that it will be exiting the camera business. Unlike Nikon, which announced just a week ago that they were exiting most of the camera market, Konica’s exit is complete. The company will withdraw from both film and digital camera market. In addition, Konica will also exit the camera film business. Sony will acquire Konica’s camera technology and will also provide service and support to existing customers.

Konica Minolta said that it will now focus on their traditional and most profitible business of high-end copiers and fax machines. Analysts reacted in a postive way to the announcement: “Withdrawing from the camera and photo-processing businesses is positive as it allows the company to better focus resources on office equipment,” said Nobuhito Owaki, a Nomura Securities analyst in a conversation with Bloomberg.

I don’t really like Sony. I bought a Konica Minolta camera and now it would seem that my camera’s support would be “transferred” to them.

  1. ya, it’s a sad death really
back in the day, actually, Konica-minolta (well one of them) were the first to invent autofocus and light metering through the lens. Probably the 2 most important things in making photography doable for normal people .

    fun fact

  2. pketh: They did? Wow, I can’t imagine having to focus myself, I just snap and go, hahaa… It’s a sad death indeed.

  3. lol ya
actually though, i think manual focus still has it’s uses on my old digicam.

like, sometimes I like to prefocus a shot before I even raise up my camera at a subject so that I don’t have to wait for the autofocus (to be really sneaky), with practice you get really good at it

I also use it, to get fancy Macro style shots of close up objects or to blur objects in one part of the photo and have the main subject sharp

    fun tips :)

  4. pketh: I heard of that trick, it’s a cool one and I can’t figure out how to do so with my camera. I think I may be able to do manual focus with my digital camera and I just have to figure out how, hahaa…
