I finished my Basic Military Training (BMT) already. It has been quite an experience. A slightly different one though. Instead of participating in the usual activities, I spend more time helping out in this and that as I have an ‘excuse heavy-load’ status. It’s still interesting helping out though. I learnt out the system in the military works.
Still, today, I attended the pass out parade. I just join in to throw my jockey cap. I didn’t do much things I guess. The parade was quite a bore. Nothing fanciful. A minister was there. Yesterday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was there as the reviewing officer of the parade. Today’s parade, we had some minister that no one can name. The reviewing officer was later discovered as the minister for the Tampines area.
Then we took lots of pictures with my platoon mates and throw lots of sergeants up (and of course catching them). And my father was there with me since he loves taking the ferry that goes to the Pulau Tekong camp. It was a great time I had after the parade and my father enjoyed the ferry return trip back to Singapore.
I guess I attended BMT. I didn’t go through my 24 km route march for the record. I only completed the 8 km mark one. I didn’t go through the Standard Obstacle Course (SOC) too. I didn’t pass IPPT (some physical test).
Well, I have the attendance though.

Good that you’ve completed the 1st phase of your military life (kinda equivalent to kindergarten.. hehe). The more interesting will be to find out where you will be posted after BMT. That’s where most of your memories of NS will be. But from the looks of it, you are unlikely to get the “charge-up-the-hill” kinda vocation due to your medical condition.
by viv (Sep 8, 2005 at 9 AM)Does everyone need to go thorugh this? easy or not???!!!
by yongkian (Sep 8, 2005 at 1 PM)viv: Yup, if I really do get those vocation, I think I’ll just go out of course. It’d be too painful to carry too heavy stuff. Also, I hate this running around kinda thing.
yongkian: I would say yes, almost every man has to go through this. However, if you are lucky enough (or perhaps some would think it as not as lucky), you go to a vocation straight away. You would however lose a chance to go into leadership vocations.
BMT is quite easy to go through I suppose, just relax and watch the days pass. The key thing in BMT is to develop good relationships with your platoon mates and sergeants as quickly as possible. It’s the power of networking, hahaa… If you know your platoon mates well enough, life is really more fun there. It always feels much better to work and get punished and play with people you know than total strangers.
