Army terminology of the week
- Chao geng – Based on the Hokkien dailect, ‘chao geng’ basically means that you excuse yourself from duties do get away with your responsibilities. Something like that.
You know some people will report sick and stuff… Well, those people are often referred to as people who chao geng.
It is hard to set a standard actually. Think about it – a person is having cough and he reported sick, is he trying to chao geng? Most commanders would think so, but it is hard to know how bad the cough is actually.
I reported my cough twice actually. Then I don’t bother any more because I realize my cough will never recover. When I reported sick, some guys come to me and say that I chao geng.
And recently, I had this back problem that excuses me from heavyload and I was labeled ‘chao geng’ again. It’s kinda like a problem I had since I am born. I tried to explain to a few. After explaining to a dozen of people, I stopped. I grew tired explaining.
Do you know what really is ‘chao geng’? Knowing that you have to, say, clean the toilet and you just stayed there and take naps then claim that you feel giddy when you actually just feel sleepy. At least that is ‘chao geng’ in my opinion.

Ya. I hate those army guys. They doesnt know how much it affects the mental of the people who really sick. Also I realise that my body become weaker in BMT. I always feel sicks like flu and cough but always feel pressurized to not fall out. In the end, i get sicker.
by dgj (Aug 27, 2005 at 1 PM)dgj: I totally understand how you feel. I am feeling drowsy the other time after eating the medicine and some guys just simply have to turn back and chant “chao geng, chao geng” to me. It just makes me feel worse…
I hope you get well soon, the best way to recover is to be optimistic and happy in my opinion. The medicine you get just make you drowsy. It can’t really solve the coughing especially since the air is notably polluted.
