The whole idea of coughing in Pulau Tekong is nicknamed ‘tekong cough’. It is a strange case really.

You just keep on coughing. And you’re not alone. Everybody is coughing with you. There are several probable reasons why Pulau Tekong makes you cough.

Worse than the Singapore main land’s air

Many there is something to do with the air. The air is not that clean.

Water supply

The water supply is generally not for drinking unless otherwise stated. If you are thinking of drinking the water from the tap, please don’t. Drink from the taps that are connected with blue colored pipes. Those water are more for drinking. They seem to have a higher chlorine content though.

Exercising when sick

It is not surprising to note that if you are already having a cough and you went for exercise, it’s just going to make your cough worse.

Moisturised room

You know, some people wash their clothes in the room and they just leave it overnight beside their beds? Well, it’s not a good thing to do. The water moisture gets into your nostrils and who knows, the detergent or whatever fills the air. Your cough would recover faster if you leave all your wet clothes outside the room.

Someone cough too

Well, the cough bacteria just spreads. When you have cough, you spread it to the poor fellow sleeping next to you. Then he spreads to another fellows. And soon you start to recover, only to find yourself getting a worse cough the next day.

Dusty room

Okay, just clean your room. Pulau Tekong is quite a dirty place apparently. All the dust collects under your bed and just nearly everywhere. It’s always good habit to clean your room at least once every 2 days. A little maintenance can make a difference.

Conclusion

The best solution to stop your cough is to keep your room clean, have no wet clothes in the room and drink from the taps with the blue pipes only.

Of course, in addition to that, you can always report sick and you would probably be given 2 or 3 days to rest. Unfortunately, reporting sick may not be a good thing.

  2. Nafcom: Well, they are trying to do something about it. If you have a sick reporting system that is too open, you may end up having lots of people reporting sick but aren’t really that sick.

It’s very easy to fake an illness, you can just go to the medical officer and complain about some whatever joint pain, chances are high that you get numerous days off.

Or just say you have a backbone ache or something, it’s quite difficult to check those. Anyway, I haven’t tried that before. But my friend complained of backbone ache and he was given excuse. His one is genuine though, but this doesn’t keep me wondering how the hell does the doctor check without performing an Xray on the patient.
