This is a continuation of my previous two entries about dumb laws.
It is illegal to come within 50 meters of a pedestrian crossing marker on any street.
Huh? What does this mean. There must have been a mistake here. 50 meters is just too big a number.
If you are convicted of littering three times, you will have to clean the streets on Sundays with a bib on saying, “I am a litterer.” This will then be broadcasted on the local news.
Once again, I never heard of this law. If the Singapore law actually has this shit, our law book is so fucked up. Seriously. It’s not dumb, it’s just screwed up.
It is illegal to pee in an elevator.
This isn’t dumb. This made perfect sense! I blogged about how Urine Detection Device probably works.

(Urine detection device signs in Singapore lifts.)
Trust me, you wouldn’t want pee in the elevator. Lifts claimed to be equipped with Urine detection devices that would take pictures of you peeing. Just don’t pee in the lifts.
Bungee jumping is illegal. (Repealed)
Oh, I remember this one. I don’t think I would try it if it were to be allowed in Singapore. I would say this law is of no concern to me. But they shouldn’t have banned it in the past. It’s dumb.
Conclusion
While there may be many dumb laws that aren’t publicized, laws are there for a reason. Probably because of a past mistake that someone made, probably because of a conservative society. Some laws are written long ago and have yet to be updated even. I think the Singapore law is strict, but it is not dumb. I don’t mind being in Singapore to be with these strict laws. They make sense most of the time. I have never been fined for littering, eating and drinking in train stations, urinating in elevators, walking in my house naked. [That's because I didn't do those.] I am quite a law abiding citizen in a sense.
Which brings me to the point – since I am so law abiding, can the government please take my suggestion and decrease the national service to just 1 year? Change it to 1.5 years, then 1 year or something. Under the Enlistment Act, Singaporean men got to serve 2 years in the army. If the government is really to change the Enlistment Act, it will be too late to affect me actually.
But still, I hope, in future, Singaporean men don’t have to serve the army for 2 years and can contribute to the society as soon as they get out of their studies. You will forget a lot of things after 2 years too, it makes studying harder to continue with.
As usual, I end the post saying that this is a message is written long ago and blah blah. It’s written on May 27, 2005 in fact. I should be in the Physical Training Phase Programme right now. I’ll probably be back on July 1, 2005 which will be soon. Finally.
