The British calls this sport “football”, the Americans calls this “soccer”, it doesn’t really matter - whatever name it takes, my friends will still love them.
But I don’t understand why.
What is so interesting about football [I prefer to call it football.] It is just a bunch of people fighting for possession of a ball. I don’t know why it people just love seeing that. My cousin told me that I should really go to a stadium to check out football because that really is what football is about - to be cheering for the team you like while you watch their moves.
Problem is, there is no team I like. I heard of a few from English, they are popular in Singapore. _Manchester United. Arsenal. Liverpool. Chelsea._ And of course, the Spanish one - _Real Madrid_ who now has David Beckham I believe. I never bothered to dig out their winning records; I very much believe a couple of my friends can recite to me the history of Manchester United in 30 minutes and identify every single player of that team including the reserve players.
Most women don’t understand football too. I somehow can understand the bored looks in their faces watching their boyfriends getting excited over men (kicking a ball). My girlfriend won’t enjoy football too I believe so, in a way, she’s quite lucky to get a boyfriend that don’t quite get football too (partly because she got a tech geek).
I can tell you roughly why I don’t like football:
* It’s too bloody long, it’s 2 hours for goodness sake. I can do many things in 2 hours and I choose not the television.
* I often don’t know what the hell is the sports commentator is talking about.
* I don’t understand my cousin’s obsession with Alex Ferguson (manager of _Manchester United_).
* I dislike sports that involve too many people.
* I am more interested in news reports of riots after the football games.
Football is not for me I guess. Basketball, on the other hand, appeals to me more on television. I find it more exciting. It’s shorter, I find the commentator more enegectic and entertaining. I like their cameras and production methods better than football in television. Unfortunately, I don’t really see basketball games telecasted in Singapore.
I find soccer boring also. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a soccer game on television. Basketball is 2 hours long also, but the game itself is much faster so it’s easier to watch it. However, I only watch the final games to see who will win the championship because there are too many playoff games (40 games in 40 days or something).
by Jessica (May 24, 2005 at 4 AM)Jessica: Basketball seemed much shorter somehow, I didn’t know it’s 2 hours too. I haven’t got much chance of watching basketball matches. I recall my secondary school’s inter-class basketball competitions, it’s 20 minutes only I think. I think I’ll catch the final games only too, same reason with you.
by Mr. Dew (May 24, 2005 at 11 AM)Yeah. Cannot agree more
by gj (May 24, 2005 at 12 PM)Oh! So you and me have another thing in common: dun like to watch soccer.
by viv (May 24, 2005 at 12 PM)Am I the only one that doesn’t mind watching soccer? XD I don’t think it’s that boring.. unless the entire match has no goals scored at all. Then THAT is boring. Otherwise, it’s cool! But I’m not all that crazy over any particular manager or team. Maybe just David Beckham haha. I still watch matches if I happen to catch them and they are interesting. XD
by milky (May 24, 2005 at 2 PM)gj and viv: Yup, gj’s quite similar to us too by the way. He is in biotechnology though, not bioinformatics.
milky: You’re not alone. To think that a female would be the one that doesn’t mind watching soccer, hahaa… I have more or less stereotyped the females to be people who find soccer boring and unexciting. I don’t have the patience to watch soccer I guess, I rather watch Channel News Asia, lol
by Mr. Dew (May 24, 2005 at 3 PM)Football is a good sport, but it isn’t for everyone. Whether you like it or not, you have to admit that it is the true football (constant use of the foot kicking the ball).
