bioinformatics//two

So yesterday’s yesterday’s [bioinformatics//one] morning, I left my home late. It’s the Monday blues. Sorry, I didn’t mean to be late. Blame it on Daniel and Jason, they’re always later. Yeah, it’s their fault. I must have thought I was early because I always seen them later than me. Must be. Must be.

I was thinking of depositing my cheque into the bank when I saw the bus nearing. I ran across the road not-very-legally and boarded the bus. And I saw my lecturer.

And so I asked him if it’s possible for me to divert to the IT field from bioinformatics. Yes, my clever idea is to divert. I need to specialize in something. I know that I am weak in biotechnology. My interest is in informatics. It would be nice if it’s related to software development. I think I would be interested in multimedia computing, web developing, software engineering, programming stuff and information services.

It’s not going to be easy. If I do that, I do not get a year worth of reduction too. Please, sorry, let me grumble a little. You know there is this Career 2005 book by SPH all around Singapore? It’s a crap book for my course’s people. The content is less than useful. It’s just trying to coin you for SG$6.80 because they think they haven’t earn enough money by selling newspapers. (SPH stands for Singapore Press Holdings.)

And the worse would be – I need to be the top 5% and have a merit in order to switch I think. Let me tell you something, my course has 13 people, top 5% is – let me doing some math – 1 puny human being. And I can tell you for sure that I ain’t number 1 (neither number 2, nor 3..). Okay, let’s talk about merit. I am sure I will not get it. Yong Liang tells me I need 10 distinctions, I count again and again and is so sad to conclude that I am not eligible.

So how to get to university?

I’ll blog more when I am free, I’m sleepy now.

I have been thinking, what if I can’t get admitted to a NTU (Nanyang Technological University) or NUS (National University of Singapore) – what should I do?…

  2. from the bioinfo people i have seen so far, there are basically 2 types who are more valuable and marketable than others:
    1) those who are EQUALLY comfortable running assays as well as creating arrays and for loops. They traverse from wet to dry, dry to wet with seamless dexterity. Amphibious, if u like.
    2) those who are very mathematically inclined. They are often very good with logic, statistics, numbers and program very powerful one-liners. They speak like engineers and are able to create mathematical formulae like nobody’s business. More importantly, they can also translate those maths equations EASILY into source codes.

So which one do you wanna be?

  3. viv: I think I can only be the first one at the moment. I would prefer working more on the software side, but if you want me to do PCR for you, I can perform it after some er… revision. But I think I can do those stuff for you. As for the second one, I don’t think I am capable of that. I am not mathematically inclined. I like computing without the crazy mathematical stuff like eigen values, jacobian matrii and other. I heard of them and still have no idea what they mean at present.

  4. for the 2nd type of people mentioned above, they are usually double-majors in Computer Science and Statistics. eigen values and jacobian matrices are all from the Stats world. if you wanna continue your life in the bioinfo line, you gotta surpass the psychological barrier that maths is bewildering. i know, i know… bio people fear maths. I have such phobia too, but in the past few months, i realised that they are not as bad as i tot. more importantly, to even start writing some bioinfo programs, you might have no choice but to know a new friend called Eigen.

  5. viv: That would be hard for me I think. I admit that I fear mathematics though. My knowledge of mathematics never surpass the A Mathematics in secondary school. I did know some statistics stuff but it’s those really simple stuff. By the way, are you studying right now? If so, where’re you studying at the moment?

  6. i am employed at a local university and studying part-time for MSc in another llocal university. Both work and study are bioinfo. Hence you can say that i do know quite abit about both local universities. No worries, you are still young. there’s still time for you to gain more knowledge of maths and stats.

  7. viv: Hopefully I’ll be interested in them. :)
