The day before yesterday, I went to watch _National Treasure_. And then, yesterday, I watched _Kung Fu Hustle_. Two movies in a week. This cannot be too often as it isn’t good for my finances.
Both are nice movies. I like _National Treasure_ for it’s humor. Riley _(played by Justin Barta)_ brought lots of laughter in the film by – well – being stupid. It’s a very important to have such characters. Unfortunately placing silly character dialouges at climaxes of the film isn’t exactly the best way to keep your audiences excited.
It’s stupidity at its very best – _Kung Fu Hustle_. Stephen Chow is really good at that. I think the film’s really funny. But make sure you understand at least a bit of Mandarin because the English translations aren’t that good. To make up for it, most of the funny parts are in the form of actions.
Both films are ridiculous and will not happen in reality. I can’t stand _National Treasure_’s coincidences. The riddles are too hard and I don’t believe anyone would solve it. As for _Kung Fu Hustle_, the whole damn movie is a ridicule anyway. To _National Treasure_ for trying to be ridiculous in an adventure film and ultimate made me think it’s lame – 3 stars. To _Kung Fu Hustle_ which is basically about being lame to begin with – 4 stars.
I watched _Kung Fu Hustle_ with digital cinematic experience so the images are sharp, that’s another plus point I guess.

by Mr. Dew (Jan 1, 2005 at 12 AM)National Treasure was a good movie!
by aurora_starfire (Jan 1, 2005 at 5 AM)I saw it back in November.
It was either that or The Incredibles, lol
Riley was my favorite character,too.
Usually when people use sarcasm it makes you want to smack them, but his character was funny.
aurora_starfire: Yup, I agree. Riley’s funny. I can’t imagine this movie without him, hahaa..
by Mr. Dew (Jan 1, 2005 at 11 PM)I haven’t seen either movie yet, but National Treasure’s doing well in the States so that makes me want to see it.
Kung Fu Hustle won’t be in the US for a while, unfortunately.
by Jessica (Jan 3, 2005 at 9 AM)Jessica: Catch them if you can. I would recommend Kung Fu Hustle, but note that it’s in Mandarin and you would hav eto read the subtitles which may spoil the overall enjoyment of a film, hahaa..
by Mr. Dew (Jan 3, 2005 at 9 AM)I kinda like subtitles.
by aurora_starfire (Jan 5, 2005 at 2 AM)I watch foreign films all the time so it’s easy to get used to.
:0)
aurora_starfire: I see, then you may enjoy Kung Fu Hustle. The last time I tried to watch a cantonese film (in VCD) with English subtitles, I was troubled with white subtitles against very light background. Basically I can’t see the subtitles some times..

by Justin Black Crow (Feb 19, 2005 at 3 PM)Justin Black Crow: I’m a fan of Stephan Chow movies. I think they are one of the few Chinese movies that I pay to watch it in the cinemas, lol
by Mr. Dew (Feb 20, 2005 at 11 PM)I don’t think that National Treasure is worth seeing, I haven’t seen it it but let me explain. I think that any movie about destroying the secruity around constitution to get at a treasure map on the reverse side of it is RETARDED! Plus I think that the Whole Nicolas Cage Adventure movie concept just sucks too. When I saw the trailer I thought to myself, “Hey that looks just like ConAir except it looks dumber and less believable!” Not to mention that the whole crew would have been shot to death trying to screw with the Constitution in the first place. Kung Foo Hustle on the other hand looks like it might be worth seeing. I think that the digital effects look humorous and I love a good fight sequence! I think its opening here in LA today so I think I might go and watch!
by Skept1C4L Steve (Apr 9, 2005 at 1 AM)Skept1C4L Steve: Exactly – the whole reverse side of treasure map thing is ridiculous! Or perhaps – like you say – RETARDED! Nicolas Cage is okay in an Adventure film, I have nothing against the man. I don’t like the foundation of the story to be build on some Congress piece of paper.
For me, I manage to convince myself of that after a while in the movie. The rest of the movie just gets more ridiculous as the bad guys seem to be so damn lucky and caught up with the good guys. It doesn’t make me feel good, it made me feel stupid some how.
The nice parts are the humor I think. It’s enjoyable to watch still, but none as great at Kung Fu Hustle. You should watch it, but prepare for the a really ridiculous plot. And it’s several times more funny then National Treasure.

Unlike Kung Fu Hustle by Stephen Chow, House of Fury is by Stephen Fung. Two Stephens, two movies. Both are directors and both acted their movies as the main character. Mr. Dew reviews on House of Fury….
