My friend and I went to check out our workplaces today. I have to say I am impressed.
Imagination – Tech Plaza
My friend is going to work at Bioinformatics Research Centre in Tech Plaza. I imagine this tech plaza to be a flat piece of land with around a dozen of short but cool-looking buildings in the plaza.
Reality – Tech Plaza
Well, in reality, it is not called ‘Tech Plaza’ it seems. It is known as ‘Techno Plaza’ or ‘Research Techno Plaza’ (or was it ‘Techno Research Plaza’), not the one where disc jockeys spin their thing. It turns out to be around 8 levels high. It is indeed cool looking. And the Techno Plaza is just a building by itself. And within this building, they lies a portion dedicated to Bioinformatics.
Imagination – Bioinformatics Institute
I am going to be attached to Bioinformatics Institute. As cool as the name sounds, it is not found in my father’s street directory. I imagine it to look like my school – Singapore Polytechnic. Short buildings too, but primary function is to be used for teaching and holding conventions.
Reality – Bioinformatics Institute
Well, in reality, there isn’t such a building named ‘Bioinformatics Institute’ it seems. That time, I couldn’t find it, so I went into the food court (Soulfree of Makansutra) to ask around. I asked a few people, none heard of this place. So I went to a tall gentleman carrying folders and a notebook case to ask. I thought he looks as if he works around this area. He announced, “you’re right here, this is the building.” So I found Bioinformatics Institute. A check with their security guards confirmed that this building, called Matrix, holds Bioinformatics Institute. Cleverly hidden.

by yingru (Dec 6, 2004 at 1 AM)I don’t think we have biotech plazas…we have lots of law offices, though…I want to be a computer programmer and I might have to leave town to find a job…great…but it’s good you can find at least one potential place you can work.Maybe I should move to Singapore, lol :0)
by aurora_starfire (Dec 6, 2004 at 11 PM)yingru: Yup, most went there as to eat only. It’s quite a popular food court it seems. Luckily I checked there earlier, I doubt I’d find the place that easier on the day itself.
aurora_starfire: Law offices? I don’t really find them plenty in Singapore. I do see lots of office buildings though. I can program in Visual Basic .NET, it would be nice to get a programming job actually. I’m quite interested in it. It’s not easy though, not easy with my to-be-fulfilled diploma since it’s Biotechnology (Bioinformatics). It’s just too competitive in my opinion.
