I just watched the first hour of Singapore Idol. I always wanted to catch this show, never have much chance to. And today, it would be the finale of Singapore Idol, unfortunately, even then, I am late to watch the show by an hour.

That’s fine, at least I finally got to listen to a full song sung by Sylvester Sim. I do have to agree with a couple of my friends that his singing isn’t that great. His English pronunciation isn’t good too.
On the other hand, I heard Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah’s (Taufik) singing. With that kind of singing, he can easily win this final. Taufik’s singing is near perfect, he sounds awesome in my opinion. Sylvester sounds like he needs more polishing.
“Sing with me, baby!” Sylvester screams as his fans responded by screaming instead of singing. Actually, I heard Sylvester screaming “Sympathy! Baby!” instead. Oh well..
Sympathy?
Yes, Sylvester does need sympathy votes. I heard 2 songs and pretty much concluded Taufik’s the winner. Then I heard Sylvester singing Jay Chow’s An Jing (‘Quiet’ in Mandarin) which once again – not surprisingly – left half the crowd noisy with cheers and support.
Sylvester did ‘An Jing’ really well. His attempt in Bon Jovi rock pales in comparison. Sing more Mandarin tunes, he doesn’t go wrong on that in my opinion. If he really wins Singapore Idol and releases an album, he should consider doing a Mandarin one instead.
This contest is an English one though, so my pick is – Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah.
[UPDATE: Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah won!]

Sly is pretty much stuck. His diction in English songs is bad, but he can’t speak proper fluent chinese. So if he is going to release an English album, he’s gonna polish up his diction. But if he’s going to do a Chinese album, he will really need to go practise on his spoken Chinese. I think he’s pretty stuck and nowhere. But that doesn’t prevent me from liking him anyway.
Still, Taufik won. He can represent us better in World Idol in my opinion. But .. haha. I still think Sylvester can appeal to the audience more.
by yingru (Dec 1, 2004 at 11 PM)Everyone is betting their money on Taufik it seems. It is obvious. With Orlinda’s and Taufik’s fans joining together against Sly’s fans, it’s not surprising…
by sky (Dec 2, 2004 at 12 AM)yingru and sky: Taufik’s pretty good too. I think his talents are more balanced up. Sylvester seems to be always doing several trademark actions – think the finger-pointing at himself, the audience and well, just about anywhere.
Sylvester didn’t win, I thought – what a relief. I mean, I seriously can’t imagine him taking part in World Idol singing this way. And in World Idol, I don’t think a half-smile (as what magazines would call) wouldn’t win much votes on image appeal.
I think he would sell well locally though.
Like sky mentioned, Orlinda fans are more likely to support Taufik than Sylvester. That’s what I thought too, and Orlinda’s father is probably furious enough to put all his cash into Taufik, i.e. against Sylvester. That’s my fifty cents worth.
by Mr. Dew (Dec 2, 2004 at 12 AM)It’s Olinda by the way.
by yingru (Dec 2, 2004 at 4 PM)yingru: Opps, I think I’ve been making this mistake since day one of the contest, so it’s Olinda, hahaa

I’d like to see Singapore Idol. All I can watch are the American and Canadian Idols, and those get kinda old.I’ve always wondered what the Idol craze was like in other countries.Do you guys have a judge that puts everyone down like we do? One Simon Cowell is great, but a whole bunch of them is one big comedy show, lol.
I’d like to hear this Taufik guy sing.Is he good?
by aurora_starfire (Dec 2, 2004 at 10 PM)What genre of music is he into?
oh and one more thing-I saw the picture of Sylvester and he reminds me of that T.M.Revolution guy…the hair, and all. He’s kinda cute, lol…ok,I’ll shut up now.
by aurora_starfire (Dec 2, 2004 at 10 PM)I didn’t catch much of Singapore Idol too. Just a couple of episodes. We have the judges, they’s Dick Lee, Florence Lian, Douglas and Ken Lim. Their styles are slightly different with the American Idol judges.
Someone to put others down? That would be Ken Lim I suppose. I was a couple of episodes back then and I would say he did a great job. Great vocabulary too. Makes me wonder if he hid a thesaurus on his lap or something.
Taufik’s good, I don’t know what he is interested in though, I don’t hear much from him. I do know that Sylvester is interested in rock though.
By the way, what’s T.M. Revolution?
by Mr. Dew (Dec 4, 2004 at 11 PM)T.M. Revolution:It stands for “Takanori Makes Revolution”.
Heh,that’s snappy,lol…
He’s a guy from Japan who does techno-pop,if you’re into that kind of thing. At first I thought it was a band, but it’s actually one guy. He’s been to the States and I never got to see him.I think he was in Baltimore last year.My folks would never let me go from New York to Maryland just to see this guy perform,so I just listen to his mp3’s,lol.
He might be the artist/band of the week next week(I’m trying something new in my blog this month.)so you could hear a song or two from him.His outfits on stage are outrageous, ranging from something that looks like a chicken suit to a black leather/flame design ensemble.Other than that,he’s pretty cool.
by aurora_starfire (Dec 6, 2004 at 4 AM)you can go to http://www.tm-revolution.com if you want to check him out,or at least see what he looks like.My brother thought he was a girl. How? I don’t know. He’s pretty flat-chested for a girl.
:0)
I saw this and this images and he does look like a girl sometimes, hahaa.. Can’t blame your brother. It’s the trimmed eye brows.
I wonder if he did any Naruto (an anime) songs, he might have. Nevertheless, T.M.Revolution’s music is pretty good. I don’t think they look very similar – as in Sylvester and T.M.Revolution, hahaa..
by Mr. Dew (Dec 7, 2004 at 12 AM)sly r0x… taufik rox equally
by haha (Dec 8, 2004 at 8 PM)
by haha (Dec 8, 2004 at 8 PM)haha: Sly lost in the end though. He probably got a contract too nevertheless.
by Mr. Dew (Dec 8, 2004 at 10 PM)I prefered the original version of superstition which he sang in the final showdown on Singapore Idol than the one in his album. I appreciate his effort on that song though. I think he wants to appeal to younger generation but for the older generation, they may prefer the original version of Superstition. Good luck in your career Taufik.
by Juliah (Jan 29, 2005 at 4 PM)Juliah: I haven’t heard ‘Superstition’ actually. I may have missed it. But Taufik seemed to give me the impression that he is under a lot of control. It’s like when the company wants this – he complies. There seemed to me to be little freedom. Or perhaps, he’s just leaving everything to the company. [I get that impression through magazine interviews, but I may be wrong.]
by Mr. Dew (Jan 30, 2005 at 12 AM)What is Taufik’s HandPhone number?????
by Khairunnisa (Feb 6, 2005 at 8 PM)Khairunnisa: I’m sorry, I wish I knew so that I can threaten him to give me some free CDs, but I don’t have his number.

I took this picture after I returned from work. You can mouseover the objects to see item descriptions….
by //beconfused (Mar 27, 2005 at 12 AM)I had read the comments left and I think you are wrong. SLY is the best even tough his education is poor. You see, Mark Lee had poor education too still can be a director of rainforest company. We cannot judge this strictly by the book.
by Nancy (May 26, 2005 at 5 PM)I don’t think education matters a lot here. It’s about singing an English song. Sly did not manage to sing an English song as well as Taufik. Mark Lee has a remarkable careers, we all saw him from a comedy variety show and he grew from rather humble beginnings for months. Sly, on the other hand, reached out to the people in a matter of weeks. He sings Mandarin songs well, but English tunes ain’t for him. I feel Sly’s poorer education probably even allow him to connect with the crowd more in a way. It makes the audience feel at ease. Still – he should just sing Mandarin song, hahaa…
