A follow up on “super//wet“. What a coincidence. The New Paper made a report on the decreasing number of people visiting wet markets on September 7, 2004.

Wet Market Woes
He used to own 16 stalls at a wet market in Bedok. Over the last 24 years, he has given up all but four of them. Leaving each of them was not easy for Mr. Poom Hee Hai, but he couldn’t ignore the economics: Business was bad – as it has been for many wet market stallholders.

The supermarkets have taken away many of their customers. Hardly any young people go to wet market these days. Only some of the older ones still do – those who are free to shop in the morning and prefer to more personal service and fresh rather than frozen food.

Supermarkets Are More Convenient

Air-conditioned. Wider range of products. Affordable prices. These are the top three reasons why shoppers prefer to go to supermarkets.

Mrs. Christine Wong, who was at Shing Song Supermarket in Bedok, said it was more convenient to shop at a supermarket as she could get all her shopping done at once.

Madam Ann Yong, another shopper, said it’s out of necessity that she shops at supermarkets. “When I come home from work, the wet markets are already closed,” she said. “I don’t really want to wake up at 5 AM just to go to the market!”

A spokesman for NTUC FairPrice, which has 76 outlets island-wide, said, “Customers get excellent value for money. We import directly from the farms and the fresh produce is packed according to our stringent requirements.”

Both articles are truncated. To get the full article.. hmmmp.. Okay, unless you buy The New Paper, I don’t think there is any other way to get hold of the full article. Oh, you can search the local media archives I supposed.

Seems like supermarkets are the way to go nowadays. I prefer the supermarkets generally, it’s just good to see all the goods neatly arranged. It’s easy to get what to want too. This reminds me of “Market Basket Analysis”. ["Market Basket Analysis" is a Data Mining procedure.]
