Recently I have been doing some categorizing. I realized how little I blogged about Singapore. So, yesterday night, when I was preparing to sleep, I thought I’ll blog something about Singapore today.

Problem is – ’bout what?

Well, the recent Singapore Idol. After watching 3 seasons of American Idol (actually I watched about 20% of it only), I’m quite excited over the idea of Singapore Idol. MediaCorp grab the rights for it and I see rival media company, MediaWorks, calling Singapore Idol just a “talent-time”.

But after learning a little more about Singapore Idol, I’ve got a feeling it won’t be successful. My girlfriend and I love the auditions of American Idol, it’s a time when the world’s sadists united to have a good laugh although we can’t sing.

And I doubt Singapore Idol is going to show the embarrassing stuff of the auditions. But that’s precisely what I’m looking for. If Singapore Idol is going to show these things, the next day, you’ll seen a bunch of faggots idiots bombarding The Straits Times’ forum.

You see, Singaporeans are rather conservative in this sense. No one wants to be humiliated in national TV. And Singapore is small. There’re around 4 million people and that includes the young and the old. Chances are high that you’ll see your old pal making a fool out of himself on nation TV. But hey, that’s exactly what I’m looking for.

But hey again, it’s unlikely going to happen. If it happens, there may be lawsuits flying all over the place. And if the contract they signed disallow them to sue the company over these disputes, it still gains bad publicity for the company. [The company is MediaCorp and I have nothing to do with the company.

So what’s the deal? You purchased the rights for a show, disallowing other media companies to interview your contestants. Screen their bad moves on TV, get bad publicity through your rival’s newspaper forums. Or you can not show the auditions and upset me. Please pick the former.

The whole Singapore Idol deal might as well not happen. They better show something funny in the auditions.. But I fear they may just do some censoring to the really bad ones.

The host and the judges. I am positive that you won’t get a Simon Cowell in the judges seat but I wish there’s someone like him on the seat. Simon’s one of the reason that people watch American Idol.

I have to admit I’m one of those sadistic people who enjoy Simon’s sense of humor. In Singapore, there won’t be any of these. So it seems American Idol and Singapore Idol has little similarities, perhaps that’s what MediaCorp wants – to be different. And perhaps MediaWorks is somewhat right, Singapore Idol is just an over-hyped Talent-time.

  1. S’pore Idol will work. We will have our own unique taste and judges. Even if the show suck to the core, people will still like it. We’re patriotic Singaporeans, we got nothing much else to speak about.
